Happy Diwali

Katrina Kerr-Bell —

We were blessed on Wednesday by the Indian Community that celebrated Diwali with us. They shared food with the staff at morning tea and then lead our assembly with stories, dance and a quiz to test how well we had been listening.

Diwali is the five-day festival of Lights, celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world.

Every religion in India has distinctive traditions for commemorating this festival, but whatever the customs, there is agreement that Diwali represents the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness and wisdom for ignorance.

The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, which means “rows of lighted lamps.” These lighted lamps represent happiness and love between the families. Houses, shops and public places are decorated with diyas, which are small oil lamps. People also enjoy fireworks and sweets too, so it’s really popular with children.
