Cultivating Interpersonal Skills in Year 10 Physical Education

Mandy Page —

Physical Education is not just about running, jumping, and playing sports. It's also about developing important interpersonal skills that will serve students well beyond the sports field.

One of the key interpersonal skills students learn in Year 10 Physical Education is mahi tahi (teamwork). Through mahi tahi, they will learn the importance of cooperation, compromise, and respecting the ideas and abilities of others.

Kōrero (communication) is another vital skill. Effective communication is essential for understanding instructions, sharing ideas, and providing feedback. Listening attentively, expressing thoughts clearly, and offering constructive criticism are all important aspects of being an excellent communicator.

Taking on Mana Whakatipu (leadership) within teams and group activities will help students develop confidence, decision-making abilities, and the capacity to motivate and inspire others. Understanding and appreciating the differences in abilities, strengths, and weaknesses among their peers will help them show empathy and be supportive towards others.

This term students will study the sports activities of Futsal, Badminton, Basketball and Floorball relating to interpersonal skills. Both Year 10 classes have PE classes on Mondays and Thursdays. Please can you remind your Year 10 tamāhine (daughter) to bring her PE gear (shoes, shorts, PE shirt) to class so she can fully participate in the mahi (work) and support the other members of their tīma (team).
