National Youth Drama School (NYDS)

Jacqui Bisley —

Kia ora koutou Claire Keys is Artistic Director of the National Youth Drama School (NYDS) . NYDS is the longest running drama programme for high school students in Aotearoa - 31 years and she would like let you know about this great drama workshop opportunity in the first week of the April school holidays. " This is a fantastic experience for rangatahi. They spend a week taking classes from Street Art through to Songwriting & Screen Acting, and meet other students from all over the motu. At the end of the week they perform in the beautiful Hawkes Bay Opera House, or take part in a Cupa Dupa-style Festival Day. We know when students come to the school they often return for 2, 3 or 4 years. As you can appreciate, having cancelled the school in 2020 and 2022 due to COVID, many rangatahi haven't heard of us and we are working to rectify that. Alumni of NYDS can be found working in all areas of the performance art world such as Ben Fagan who co-runs Motif Poetry Company here in Wellington, or Madeline Bradley performing under her pseudonym Deryk, and of course the stable fare working on Shortland Street. The school runs in the first week of the April school holidays from the 8th-16th in Havelock North. The students from out-of-town can stay in billeted accommodation or at a hostel we run. Accessibility is important to us and we have a scholarship fund for those who need assistance. I have over 20 years experience with NYDS, from being a student to my current role, and every year I see the huge positive impact NYDS has on the lives of our students.I am available in the afternoons each day and am based in Wellington. Don't hesitate to give me a call on 021 173 4051 to let me know a time that suits you or if you have any questions."
