Teaching and Learning if Staff or Students are Isolating

Katrina Kerr-Bell —

The two scenarios we are initially planning for: The teacher is at school, some students are in class, and others are working from home The teacher is at home, some students are in class, and the others are working from home.

Teaching and Learning if Staff or Students are Isolating

Key

  • Maintaining consistent routines and schedules

  • Access to resources and support regardless of a student's location

  • Building and maintaining positive relationships between staff, students and home.

  • A hybrid (adapted) approach to teaching and learning that combines face-to-face teaching in the classroom and online provision for students working from home. We will operate a normal timetable while any students are working from home.

What will this look like?

  • Teachers will use their Google classrooms to post activities and resources.

  • Teachers at school will set work in a Google doc for the students isolating.

  • Teachers will endeavour to respond to any emails within 24 hours, although there may be instances where this is not possible, this is our basic expectation of teaching and learning for the first scenario.

  • Teachers may also set up a weekly online drop Q&A session via Google meets or use this platform for our students to listen/watch the lesson.

Please note that different departments have discussed the challenges particular to each subject and may have additional provisions that they feel works best for them in specific and practical subjects.

A teacher is in isolation at home, there will be a reliever in the classroom for students at school, or they may be combined with another class and supervised. Again, we have asked that work be on a Google doc on the Google Classroom. The teacher will also be available to answer live questions during a timetabled lesson.

Flexibility and understanding will depend on the situation for the teacher at home. Additional provisional beyond the base expectation of our teachers might take the fall of live streaming for part of a lesson, and again there may be other provisions made by individual departments.

Establishing relationships between home and school

Teachers will contact home to clarify students' expectations of working online and how the hybrid model will operate for their subject area.

Students well-being is at the centre of our approach to teaching and learning under life at the red light. Please connect with your daughter's Whānau Teacher if you need support at home or subject teacher if you have concerns about learning in a particular subject.

How can you support your young person at home?

As is a parent caregiver, you can support your young person and their online learning in various ways.

  • Ask if they have checked the Google Classroom for each subject this is where students find notifications about their work.

  • Asked you to share their daily timetable with you, we recommend that students follow the routine of a normal school day and also include regular breaks.

  • Drink water, eat well, exercise creativity and device-free time.

  • Where possible to provide a quiet place to work. There should be a comfortable space at home where they can work without distractions using their laptop or computer - phones are not recommended as a learning tool. If connection or access to a device is an issue, please contact the College.

Who to contact on the SLT about the hybrid framework

We know that this may be an unsettling time for some students. Our focus is to start the year well. We will use the hybrid framework when any disruption comes and make adjustments if and when they are needed.

Our Senior Leaders, if you have any questions about our hybrid approach to teaching and learning
