Model European Union Event

Katrina Kerr-Bell —

Kia ora everybody, my name is Anwyn, and I’m Hannah.

Last week on Tuesday and Wednesday we went to the Model European Union event on at parliament. We had an amazing time. If you enjoy social studies, English or debating you’ll love it. We thought that it would be a Wellington-based event but we and Scots were the only schools from the central Wellington area. Otherwise, we made friends with a group of girls from Hawkes Bay, There was a group from Taranaki…

Anwyn and Hannah attended the event together but were in different political parties and countries. Hannah represented Italy and Hannah Portugal. Each year there is a different ‘theme’ and this year it was Climate Change. We had to discuss and vote on ways for our country to respond to the theme.

There were some inspiring speakers from important positions, for example, MP Vanushi Walters, EU ambassador Nina Obermaier, and Caroline Lambert. We met in our separate political groups, debated, made changes to what we debated, and voted on laws to reach climate neutrality; presented our articles, talked, made friends and had an awesome time!

"I really enjoyed the committees. We passed and created lots of new laws, and it was super cool watching the other students debate and defend their ideas so confidently. It was fun working with my teammates, and making proposals, and it was nice to get to know the other students at the event, especially the girls from Hawke’s Bay. This was an awesome experience, and it’s open to anyone, so you should definitely come next year!"  Hannah Stark

My favourite part of the whole thing was the food, and it felt good to actually be in parliament. It was also interesting because you had to speak on the behalf of your country, not yourself so you had to pretend to be someone different. Anyway, next year hope to see you all there!
