Year 10 Camp: Building connections and embracing new experiences
The Year 10 camp at Silverstream Retreat was a chance to build connections, try new things, and have fun together.
On the first morning, Mrs O'Brien kicked off the camp with a series of icebreaker activities that instantly brought the group closer. Students laughed and shared stories as they got to know each other better, setting the tone for the rest of the camp. Later, they delved into Psalm 139, reflecting that we are all known and cherished by God. This reflection sparked creativity as students worked together to create a beautiful paper quilt, filled with nature rubbings and uplifting quotes that reflected the theme of tūhono (connection).
The afternoon offered a mix of relaxation and fun. Some students headed to the newly refurbished Ngaengae Pool, enjoying the refreshing swim, while others discovered that lawn bowls is much trickier than it looks!
However, the real magic of the day came during the camp concert—a highlight for everyone. There was much laughter as students performed dad jokes, skits, karaoke, and let loose with some enthusiastic dancing.
On the second day, the adventure continued with a trip to Battlehill Farm Forest Park in Pauatahanui, where we learned about the historical Battle of Horokiri in 1846. Students had the chance to choose between two activities: a peaceful walk through the wetlands or a heart-pumping climb up the steep hill. Those who chose the climb were rewarded not only with breathtaking views but also with a tremendous sense of achievement upon reaching the top. The stunning scenery made every step worth it.
The camp wasn’t just about the activities—it was about the connections we formed and the memories we made. I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the Year 10 students for their consistently positive attitude, which made the camp such a fantastic experience for everyone involved.
Here are some Year 10 reflections.
“I enjoyed how we all became closer and hung out with people from different friend groups. We got to know more about each other, and about our teachers.” Maisie
“This camp was the best school camp in my life. There was a lot of fun stuff to do that helped me connect to nature, teachers and especially friends.” Niya
“I enjoyed the pools, the rooms, the karaoke and the walk. It was a great time to bond with my whole friend group and will always be my favorite memory. I really loved how everyone came in and danced during the karaoke and supported each other.” Kelsey.
“As someone who's experiencing camp for the first time, the concert at night was the best thing I have ever done on a random Thursday night. I absolutely loved it.” Malavika
After an informative talk from Ms McDonald students, we then fed the eels at the nearby stream was an unforgettable experience, and for some students, it was their first time roasting marshmallows over an open fire.
With memories of shared experiences and new friendships formed, it’s clear that this camp will remain a cherished experience for the Year 10 cohort.
