Roadworks in your area –Rongotai Rd / Troy Street

Joanne Robinson —

What’s Happening?

Our crew will be setting up from 7am (today) but the road closure will be in place from 9am – 4pm.

The first section will be between Evans Bay Parade slip lane and Ross Street and is planned to take 3 shifts. However, weather can always play a part in our scheduling and rain usually means delays as asphalt won’t set properly if it’s too wet.

During this work, no through traffic will be allowed to pass Rongotai Road through this section. Buses will be detoured via Onepu Road, Coutts Street and Ross Street back to Rongotai Road. Please take extra care if travelling along Coutts Street as the buses may needs extra space to make the right turn from Onepu Road.

We will be starting with sections 1, 2 and 3 on the eastbound carriageway before switching to sections 4 and 5 in the westbound. Sections 4 and 5 will be completed at night time. Another letter will be distributed before night work commences on sections 4 and 5. Asphalt is dark in colour consisting of bitumen and aggregate which is mixed off site. It is applied hot to the prepared road surface and compacted smooth by rolling. This is to let you know that work will start soon.

What to be mindful of?

Asphalt is sticky – The asphalt we use to resurface your road consists of a sticky black substance called bitumen. Where you can, please avoid recently resurfaced areas and check your shoes before going inside or getting into your vehicle. If you need advice on removing bitumen from surfaces, please call the contractor below.

Will we be back?

Yes, to reinstate road markings and, where required, raise the service covers to the new level of the road surface.

Please ensure your vehicle is parked clear of the worksite.

To do this work we need the site to be clear of vehicles and other obstructions so parking will be affected. We will do our best to minimise disruption as much as possible but please ensure your vehicle is parked clear of the highlighted work area. If your vehicle is parked in the way we may have to tow it to a suitable park nearby. Should your vehicle be moved and not returned to its original location, please check nearby streets first before ringing the contractor listed on the reverse.

What access will be available during this time?

A no through traffic closure will be in place with only residents having vehicular access during work hours. This will be accompanied by a reduced speed limit. This will apply to all sections apart from section 3, which will be managed using lane closures only. Cyclists will also have to follow the allocated detour routes and, although pedestrians will still be able to use the route, it is recommended to stay away from the work site when possible.

Will these roadworks affect access to my property?

Residents and / or business owners will have access to their property but during phases of work there will be some delays. Milling and laying fresh asphalt can take some time so please have patience and follow directions of our crew members when around the work site. For safety reasons, private vehicles can’t pass through the worksite, so access will be restricted to the slip lanes in section 2. If you have urgent need to leave your property during work hours, we recommend you park your vehicle outside the highlighted areas before work begins. In the case of an emergency, essential services will be given priority. If you are expecting a delivery or have a tradesperson needing access we will navigate them through the work site. Rubbish collection and recycling will continue as usual.

Noise

outside of our normal operating hours. This is in order to maximise safety of pedestrians and maintain traffic flows, minimising disruption to commuters. We plan to complete all the noisiest work [milling of the road] before 11pm and will do our utmost to keep noise to a minimum.

Will there be impact to bus services?
Bus services will have to follow the allocated detour routes. This will mean stop closures and slight delays, so please allow extra time for your journey. Please note there is still some discussions about all these detours, so some could change slightly. See metlink.org.nz for more information.

Thank you
We know this work can be disruptive. We appreciate your cooperation, patience and understanding as we work to ensure our city’s roads are well looked after.
