Planning a meal with Jesus: Year 10 Religious Education

Jenny O'Brien —

10BG planned a meal with Jesus at their homes. Some of their responses were quite lovely.

The place in your home that you choose for the meal is:

I would have a meal with Jesus in this little patio in my garden with a really beautiful arch covering it which grows a really nice flower in the summer. This place is so peaceful and i think it would be the perfect place to share a meal with Jesus. (Trixie)

Either in my garden, on a picnic blanket, or at my family farm in Taranaki, in one of the paddocks on a picnic blanket. (Georgia)

The friends you invite to this special occasion are:

I would invite my family, cousins and a couple of members from my church. When I asked them they absolutely said yes to meeting Jesus. They lived quite far so It took a while for them to get there but they said It wasn't a problem for them because they were really eager to meet Jesus. Maybe some of my non-believer friends would want to join the rest of us on this very special occasion. (Shalom)

I would invite my friend Blossom because she is a devout christian and would appreciate any opportunity to see him. I would also invite the 2 priests at my church because I think they would also really appreciate a lunch meal with the man that they have their job for. (Lily)

The kinds of preparations you will need to make around the house, with food etc:

I will need to clean up the house and cook all the meat and get all ingredients and vegetables ready for the Shawarma. Then I would put some decorations around the house and light candles, put up crosses on my wall and keep bible verses on my wall. (Yordanos)

The food/drink that you would like to share with your friends and Jesus is:

I would share bread, mashed potatoes, fish, steak and water. The reason I would like to share this food is that this represents some of my culture, New Zealand’s culture and Jesus’s miracles. I would also only give out cold water so no-one is distracted from the beauty of the meal. The fish would be lightly cooked and have lemon and pepper on it. The mashed potatoes would be soft and warm. The steak would be cooked with garlic and rosemary. It would all be shared equally and eaten with laughter. (Anna)

The dishes I would offer my best friend and Jesus are either the ones I would make (bread or cake) or savory dishes like chicken curry or Vietnamese traditional beef noodle soup. (Lina)

I would bring a basic meal and water, (that could include fruit, baked bread or a charcuterie board) because I don’t want everything to be around the food but want it to be for the person that I am inviting, and I decided to invite Jesus...  (Estelle)

… For dessert I would make a fruit salad and some crêpes because they are a French food and it would also reflect my culture. For drinks I would have juice, wine and ice cold water . (Nina)

The time has finally arrived. You invite Jesus in and say:

I would probably be in a lot of shock but I would give him a hug and welcome him into my home. As I walked him outside [to the deck] I would thank him for everything he has done for my life. (Charlotte)

During the meal Jesus moves around the table to chat to each person. What sorts of Things would you like to chat to Jesus about?

First, I would thank Jesus. Thank Him for his love and being with me all my life. I would ask Him if there was anything He wished me to do that I have not yet done. I would tell Jesus that He has made me so very happy because He has granted me every desire of my heart even those I had not even imagined. (Iftu)

How to be a better person ?

Is it hard being Jesus ?

How do you forgive everyone ? (Nina)

And some wisdom from one group’s play about Eucharist:

Iftu: And it’s the same for us. Sometimes, we see Christ’s love in small, everyday acts of care and support.

Charlotte: I understand now. It’s about recognizing the love in small things.

Shalom: Exactly. Even in dark times, Christ’s love shines through in small acts of kindness.
