St Catherine's College - Alert Level 3

Katrina Kerr-Bell —

Kia ora kōutou Well done everyone, for making it to Friday! This week’s newsletter provides important information about alert levels, Tonga Language Week, examination dates and vaccinations. Thanks for taking the time to work your way through it. I hope all is well in your bubbles and that you can find some space for relaxation and recreation over the weekend.

St Catherine's College - Alert Level 3
As you are all aware, the Wellington region is currently at COVID-19 Alert Level 3, and this will remain in place until at least Tuesday 7 September at 11.59pm. This means that the St Catherine's College campus remains closed to the majority of the school community, with limited access for small groups of staff and students.

Alert Level Review & Plans for Next Week
On Monday afternoon, the Prime Minister will be announcing the Government’s decision about the alert level status for areas outside of Auckland. We will be in touch shortly after her announcement with details about the implications for St Catherine's. While we are hoping to be back on campus by the end of next week, we have asked staff and students to plan as if we won’t be. Teachers will therefore be posting the week’s work for each course onto Google Classroom on Monday and scheduling Google Meets with students for the week. If we are fortunate enough to be at Alert Level 2 at some stage next week, this work may form the basis of classwork once we are back on site.

Lea Fakatonga - Tonga Language Week
Tongan Language Week starts on Sunday 5 September, with a livestream of the opening at 2pm. This year’s theme is 'Fakakoloa 'o Aotearoa 'aki 'a e Ako Lelei' or 'Enriching Aotearoa with holistic education'. Enjoy this celebration of Tonga’s language & culture with us!.

How do you spell that?

Ask Michaela Borja. Michaela represented SCC during the Spelling Bee Aortearoa NZ 2021 - Regional Semi-finals and was placed 8th. The word that tripped her up was a word that no modern SCC student should know, uxoriously which means Excessivley submissive or devoted to one's wife [From Latin uxōrius, from uxor, wife.] We are so proud of Michaela and her achievements. This was just prior to lockdown.

Vacinations - Everyone Over 12
Everyone in New Zealand aged 12 years and over can now book their free COVID-19 vaccination. The Ministry of Health advises that two doses of the Pfizer vaccine are necessary to protect each other, our whānau and our community against the Delta variant of the virus.
