A Visit From Joan Hough

Louise MacKay —

Last week a lady who had met Mother Teresa called Joan came to visit us and tell us what it was like to be working with her.

She told us about how Mother Teresa prayed a million rosaries to get a convent in Calcutta, India. She also told us that Mother Teresa blessed everyone who worked for her every day and put her hand on their heads. Joan gave us examples of how Mother Teresa, helped and cared for people with diseases such as leprosy. She made a place for the sick to stay and be looked after. In return, they had to make the nun’s sarees and since the other villagers didn’t give them nice food she gave them seeds and other equipment for growing their own food.

When Joan started talking about her time she said she stayed 11 years after Mother Teresa had left and all she packed was a few pairs of clothes, a pair of sandals and toilet paper (it was a treat for all the people in these parts of  India.)

Joan told us many more stories about her life caring for the poor and sick people and they were all fascinating. Joan told us that Mother Teresa’s faith in God was what really helped her provide and care for these people. We learnt a lot about the great work Joan and Mother Teresa’s team did and for some of us, it has even made us think about helping in other countries when we are older.
