Summer Learning Journey
Once again we are pleased to present to you a fantastic opportunity for your children - the Summer Learning Journey!
What is it?
The Summer Learning Journey (SLJ) is designed to try and combat the summer slump that happens to students learning over the summer break.
Two activities are posted a day and there is a choice between Kick Start and Step It Up. Students complete the activity and then blog their product or learning. Points are awarded for each activity completed, with bonus points awarded for commenting on other participants blogs. The winners get prizes.
Why do we encourage students to participate in it?
The data shows that students who participate by completing three or more activities a week over the course of the summer do not slide as much as the students who do no writing activities.
Check out last years data for the group of students in our Cluster who participated in the Summer Learning Journey.
Writing Data
This data is collected using easTTle - an assessment we use to measure achievement in Writing. On average learners gain 38 points per year or about 9.5 points per term.
The SLJ group went from 33.2 points to 40.7 points a gain of 7.5 (a terms gain is 9 points). What a boost up for these students starting the year ahead of where they were when the previous year ended! The control group went from 25.3 to 25.5 so pretty much the same.
Reading Data
This data is collected using a Progress and Achievement test (PAT) in Reading Comprehension. Students read selected texts and answer questions about the content. On average learners gain 7.95 points per year or about 2 points per term.
In reading the SLJ group in our cluster went from 2.6 to 4.5 a gain of 1.9 points (2 is a terms worth). That is a huge increase. The control group had a small drop of -0.4.
