Maire Bowler —

We are continuing to work on Statistics in all of our hubs.

Here are the statistics goals for Level 3 (Year 5/6)

• Collect and sort groups of data.• Analyse and display appropriate data using differentrepresentations.• Ask investigative questions about a set of data.• Communicate trends and patterns of data in meaningfulways.• Justify choice of display with reference to highlightedpatterns.

Here is the mathematical language being used:

Statistics, data, category data, whole number data, multivariatedata, sample, investigate, organise, display, sort, classify, represent, communicate, predict, justify, outcomes, trends, stemand leaf graph, bar graph, column graph, dot plot, range, mode, median, shape, cluster, outliers.

Here is a typical problem that the children are asked to solve:

Health New Zealand is interested in the leisure activities ofchildren. These data cards have different information about theactivities of students of different ages.

Using data cards like the one above -

What do you wonder about the data? Make “I wonder...”statements.What questions could you ask about this data set?Choose one question and sort the data cards to answer thequestion. Now record your results as a representation.Make “I notice” statements about the data in relation to yourquestion. What connections can you make between the different sets ofdata?
