Raising Student Achievement

Aaron Richards —

The teachers have been very busy consolidating assessment information and preparing for the release of end-of-year progress information. Although it has been a very disjointed three years, it appears St Joseph's School has bucked the trend with some positive achievements and progress results.

At the end of 2022, St Joseph's School Papanui initiated a structured literacy approach to teaching Reading and Writing. The Little Learners Love Literacy have been introduced to the junior school, and The Code spelling programme has been rolled out across the school. More recently, a new programme called The Writing Revolution has been added to enhance student writing skills.

Evidence from the end-of-year student achievement data indicates that the introduction of these learning approaches is having a positive effect on literacy achievement across the school.

The Curriculum Refresh that is poised for release is expected to redefine how we teach Mathematics in New Zealand. St Joseph's School has taken several steps to ensure that we are ready for this change. This includes using a range of rich approaches from The Learner First Mathes. These approaches use multilevel activities such as Move'nProve, OpeNups and Recall & Reason.

Throughout the year, teams have customised their Mathematics programme to meet the diverse needs of learners.

Again evidence from the end-of-year student achievement data confirms that the Mathematics approach has had a significant effect on raising student achievement.

St Joseph's School participates in the Diocese Year 4 Religious Education Assessment. Results from this external assessment confirm that achievement at St Joseph's School is 2% higher than the average achievement score.

We can attribute this year's positive achievement results to the leadership of the school's Senior Leadership Team and the commitment of our teaching team.
