Basketball Tournament

Aaron Richards —

On Wednesday, 2nd August 2023, nineteen Year 7 & 8 basketball players from St Joseph's School travelled to the Mainpower Stadium in Rangiora to compete in the Primary Sports Canterbury Indoor Winter Basketball Tournament.

We had a great day a few weeks earlier at the North Zone tournament, cementing St Jo’s and a Basketball force to be reckoned with, having four teams finish in the top two placings, three in 1st place for their age and gender groups and one in 2nd place in our Zone.

The PSC Basketball Tournament brings together top teams from around the province. Both the boys and girls had a tough draw coming up against some of the strongest teams in pool play. We had an awesome full-on day. It was a lot of running, and the competition was far more aggressive and challenging than the Zone tournament.

Both teams showed amazing teamwork and determination and had to toughen up quickly to compete at this level. We played hard and kept great composure throughout, even when things got rough!

St Joseph's is super proud of both teams for their sportsmanship, showing care for others, and really loving our school virtues even when things got heated on the court. I am sure we would have had many spectators thinking, ”Who are these kids from St Josephs?!” We were punching well above our weight!

By the end of pool play, we had both teams finish in the top two so they moved into the quarter-finals. The girls played off for 5th and 6th spots and managed a draw in their final game, taking out 5th place by points differential. An amazing finish. Well done, girls! We are so proud of you.

The boy's team really got down to business, and things heated, but they managed to work their way into the FINALS! By this stage, the boys were tired and frustrated, and it kept on coming. The final between St Josephs and Kaiapoi North was intense and physical. Both teams jostled for points, coming up empty-handed on most trips down the court. Fouls played their part, as teams received two automatic points if fouled while shooting for a basket. In the end, the game was low scoring and tight, with foul points proving the winner in the final. The boys went down 6-8, taking out 2nd place! An awesome achievement!

All in all a fantastic day out, and we loved seeing our students competing at the highest level for Canterbury sport and doing so well! They really have made their community, their school and themselves proud. Well done to our Year 7 & 8 Boys and Girls Basketball Teams.
