CANTAMATH 2023

Greg Brown —

On Wednesday the 23rd of August students from St Joseph’s School competed in the 50th Annual Cantamath Competition.

Over 100 schools across Canterbury participated in the event which was held at the Christchurch Arena. Teams compete in a race to solve 20 mathematical word problems in 30 minutes or less.

The Year 7 team which consisted of Aki, Brody, Ethan and Nathan scored 90% in the competition, with only 7 schools attaining a higher score. The teamwork and focus from the year 7 team was very impressive especially given this was their first time competing.

The Year 8 team; George, Blake, Liam, and Fritz were faced with a hard set of questions. They showed tenacity and determination to utilise all of their skills to break down the questions. The team placed in the top 20, with a final score of 65%.

It was wonderful to see a number of past pupils representing their high schools in the year 9 and Year 10 competitions.

We are so proud of all of the members of the teams, not only in the way they represented our school but also in the commitment they showed in the weeks leading up to the event. A huge thank you to the parents for your assistance and support on the day, it was greatly appreciated.
