Catholic Feast Days
This term has been very busy for celebrations within the Catholic faith - here is an outline of the three most important feast days:
Thursday 9 May
The Ascension of the Lord
Ascension Day (Ascensio Domini), also known as the Feast of Ascension, occurs on the Thursday, forty days after Easter, and commemorates the day that Jesus ascended up to heaven.
Sunday 19 May
Pentecost
Pentecost is celebrated 50 days after Easter and is when the gift of the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples. The Holy Spirit is the third part of the Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - which is how Christians understand God, and is the means by which God is active on Earth.
Thursday 30 May
Corpus Christi
The tenth day after Pentecost, Roman Catholics celebrate the institution of the Eucharist. They eat bread and drink wine on this day. The bread refers to Jesus’ body, the wine to the blood that Jesus offered for the sake of people's salvation.
This is like Holy Thursday (the Last Supper), but the difference is that the emphasis of Corpus Christi is the representation of the bread and wine as the body and blood of Christ.
