St Joseph's School —

The recent Matariki celebrations at school brought together the essence of community, culture, and education in a display of talent and learning. This year's event was particularly special as it not only showcased the enjoyable performances of our junior and senior Kapa Haka groups but also highlighted the scientific endeavours of our students exploring the mysteries of planet Earth and beyond.

Matariki is a time of renewal, reflection, and connection—a time when we come together to acknowledge the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to the future. On Thursday, we embraced the significance of this celestial event, where the cluster of stars known as Matariki reappears in the dawn sky, signaling the start of a new year for the Māori people.

One of the highlights of this year's celebrations was the performance by our Kapa Haka groups. The junior students, with their infectious energy and enthusiasm, captivated the audience with their renditions of traditional waiata (songs).  Thank you to Mrs Simpson and Junior teachers for all your hard work.

Equally impressive were the senior Kapa Haka performances, which demonstrated a mastery of storytelling through song and dance. The grace with which they performed reflected practice and respect for the traditions they were upholding. Many thanks to Eli Reuben who has been working with this group.

Our students also showcased their academic achievements during our Matariki celebrations. With an array of projects focused on the theme of "Planet Earth and Beyond." From understanding the solar system and its impact on our environment to exploring the possibilities of space exploration, our students demonstrated a keen interest in scientific inquiry and discovery. Their presentations were informative but also showed a commitment to understanding the world around us and the universe beyond.

What made this year's Matariki celebrations truly special was the presence of whānau (family) throughout the event. Families came together to support their children, grandchildren, creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere. It was heartwarming to see generations celebrating our cultural heritage and the achievements of our learners.

We are incredibly grateful to our FOSJ committee for the supply of sausages, serviettes and sauce for the night. Also, to Linton Distributors who donated the bread.  Thank you to Aleisha and Maria for your help cooking.

As we approach the school holiday period, it's a time to unwind, recharge, and create lasting memories with family and friends. Whether you're planning a getaway or enjoying a staycation, I want to extend warm wishes for a safe and fulfilling break.
