Religious Education
It’s been a busy time in our parish over the last couple of weeks -
We witnessed some history in the making when the replica spire was installed onto the church steeple - which will eventually have the same appearance to the original spire.
Originally, the spire was built from many stones - blocks, weighing, on average 40kg each. Given the amount of blocks used to build the spire, you can only imagine its incredible weight! The replica spire has been constructed from a steel frame, and fibreglass tiles - a much lighter version of the original.
The students enjoyed watching this process, and were enthralled by the sheer size of the cranes that were used to lift the structure onto its perch.
Social Justice Week
Last week was Social Justice Week. This year’s theme was to ‘Choose Forgiveness - Know Peace’. During our RE lessons, in the build up to this, we learned about the relationship between forgiveness and peace, which is all too relevant in the global events that are currently taking place. We have had the opportunity to develop our own personal peace, which can be strengthened as we forgive and reconcile with others.
To conclude this learning, we participated in some Social Action: the junior school made ‘peace cards’, put together packets of ‘peace seeds’ and delivered them to mail boxes in our local community. They also did their bit for the environment by collecting rubbish from around the streets of Temuka. Room 2 and 3 spent an afternoon at the cemetery, giving some headstones some tender-loving-care, righting wind-blown vases, putting flowers back to their rightful place, and tidying anything that needed it.
By ‘doing our bit’ in the community, we are following the values that Saint Mary MacKillop instilled in us.
