School Attendance

As mentioned in previous newsletters, the government has set a target for school attendance to reach 80%. Currently, our school attendance rate is at 55%, a number that has not improved over the past year and is a concern for us.

We understand that students can get unwell and may need to attend funerals or other important events, and we always support families during those times. However, it’s important that when students are well, attending school should be a priority, not a choice.

We need to work together as a community to help improve our attendance rate. Your support in ensuring students are at school when they are able is crucial, and we appreciate your efforts in making school attendance a priority.

Our school break down for Term 4 2024 is below:

As part of our process we have had to ensure we have a process for absences.  An absence is any day that students are not at school.  We have aligned the process with the guidelines from STAR.

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve attendance, we have now established a clear process for handling absences. An absence is defined as any day a student is not at school. We have aligned this process with the guidelines set out by STAR to ensure consistency and clarity.

This process will help us better track attendance and support families in managing student absences:

Attendance meeting with whānau and school leaders. Develop an Attendance Action Plan (AAP).

Collaborative approach to addressing reasons for absence.

May involve Learning Support, Wellbeing Services, or Attendance Services.

🔴 Serious Concern

15+ days

Formal written notification sent home. Escalate to the Ministry of Education. School-led interventions continue.

Whānau required to attend a formal attendance meeting.

Ministry of Education and external agencies involved. Consider alternative learning support if required.

🚨 Critical Concern

20+ days

Referral to Attendance Services. Possible legal actions (e.g., formal attendance agreement).

Intensive intervention to support return to school.

Multi-agency response coordinated by MoE.
