Dare to Dream

On Monday the 21st of November all the Year 7 and 8 students took part in the annual “Dare to Dream” day at Roncalli College. This is an opportunity for students to start exploring different careers and to mix with other students from other schools.

Careers Day Report

Firstly, when we arrived we all gathered in the Gymnasium and listened to a Careers panel. There were 6 people on the panel who all had different jobs within the South Canterbury area. We had to guess their career in 20 questions. We thought there was a good variety of different people with different jobs, it was cool listening to their careers throughout the years and how they got to the job they have now. It was a very long time sitting and I think lots of the kids got bored in the end from sitting for so long.

After listening to the panel we went to a new room at Roncalli College  and listened to students who had taken part in the Gateway program for 2024. It was good listening to their job experiences and how they did taster days at different job places. It was interesting listening to the different job experiences students had taken part in and how many there was to choose from if you go through the gateway program. The person I listened to went to a barber shop and was cutting 6 - 8 people's hair every Wednesday, other students listened to someone that worked at a bakery outside school hours.

Next we had games with the Year 12 students. There were four different games they taught us to play: noodle tag, candle sticks, capture the flag and seaweed. We played these games in our groups, we rotated around in our groups until we did all of the games. The games were good after sitting down for sooooo long at the career panel, I think most people enjoyed all the games. It was cool being taught by the Year 12 Students because next year they will be the leaders in the school especially because most of the students at the careers days will be starting high school next year.

Lastly, I visited Fulton Hogan with my group, we walked around all the trucks and watched how the Asphalt was made. Then we went in the bus to the Fulton Hogan Quarry out at Levels, where all the stones are made into finer stones. Most of the time it was interesting but at parts it got a bit boring just listening to them talk but overall it was a great experience.
