Studying Change Through Growing Sea Monkeys
Room 6 currently has an exciting inquiry happening: studying ‘change’ through the growth of sea monkeys. This activity not only engages students in biology but also offers a practical lesson in observation, responsibility, and life cycles.
Sea monkeys, a popular brand of brine shrimp, are often marketed as instant pets. Students in this class received kits containing eggs, water purifier, and food, allowing us to witness the fascinating transformation from tiny eggs to lively shrimp. Over several weeks we will monitor the sea monkeys' growth, documenting each stage of their development.
The project serves multiple purposes. First, it introduces students to simple biological concepts. As they care for their sea monkeys, students learn about ecosystems and the importance of maintaining a balanced environment.
This hands-on experience gives us a sense of responsibility. We will consider daily care, ensuring the shrimp receive the right conditions to thrive. This aspect of the project promotes teamwork. Other students in the school are also visiting us to see our sea monkeys.
The classroom will also discuss other themes of change—both in nature (plant growing) and personal growth. Students will reflect on their own experiences and how they adapt to changes in their lives.
By the end of the inquiry, as they watch their sea monkeys flourish, the students will learn that change is a constant, essential part of life—both in the classroom and beyond.
