SMC —

Welcome back for an action-filled Term 3 in the Arts! Check out the photos from last term’s Grimm Tales as we gather ourselves for the infamous Eggsfactor.

Grimm Tales photos
Thanks to Petra Mingneau for these stunning photos from last term’s hilariously dark senior production. Congratulations to all the girls who participated on and off the stage and thank you to the many staff members and our marvellous PFA who gave their time and energy to support the production. Eggsfactor
Word on the street is that there is an EGGcellent concert coming up this term… dancing, singing, costumes, comedy and so much more, in a risky role-reversal where students mentor teachers and featuring our very own scene-makers, the SMC staff!
Returning this year for one night only: EGGSFACTOR 2019! Thursday 1st August 6:30-9:30pm in the Charles Luney Auditorium. You won’t want to miss this unique opportunity to see our teachers very much in or out of their comfort zones. All proceeds from tickets - just $10 each - will go towards our school charity, EGG (Educating Girls Globally) available from Eventfinda: https://www.eventfinda.co.nz

Open Dance class: Annālida Jaeger & Anna Cropp
In the first week of the holidays, senior dance students were invited to attend an open Contemporary class held by Julia McKerrow at St Margaret's. We enjoyed dancing alongside some very talented people in the dance industry and seeing St Margaret’s old girl Issy Randall take part as well. We enjoyed the freedom of this class exploring different movement vocabulary and learning upbeat dynamic phrases taught by Julia. Anna and I can’t wait to share what we learned with others and both found Julia’s class worthwhile as it not only got us moving during the holidays but helped us with our own choreography we are working towards.

Ballet exam success: Brianna Odering
In the last week of the holidays Alice McLeod, Georgia Hardy, Grace Mitchell, Maya Laws, Olivia Wilson and I attended the BBO NZ Dance Theatre Awards to compete with our medal dance. In September we won a gold medal for this dance and qualified for the competition on the 14th of July, where we won our category for Senior Troupe. Rose Griffiths from Grade 1 Ballet also competed in the ballet solo awards and received a Highly Commended award. Congratulations and thanks to our choreographer and teacher Kyllie Barnett for her passion and skill.

Atamira Dance workshop and performance
On Thursday August 1st, our senior Dance students will be treated to a workshop from visiting Auckland-based contemporary Māori dance company Atamira during the afternoon. And on August 2nd, the girls will be attending Onepū, the touring performance from this innovative dance company at the James Hay Theatre at 7pm.

Senior Arts Awards
Criteria in Pockets and Honours for Senior Dance, Drama, Music, Oratory, Technical and Visual Art Awards have been updated and are posted on Insite for student access. For our Term 3 intake, we invite Year 11-13 girls only to apply. Reminders have been sent to seniors last term and this term. The deadline for applications is 4pm, Thursday, August 1st. All application forms must be handed into the Performing Arts office WN202 and sent to the Arts Facilitator Mary Davison in word or pdf format by this date.
Please note that it is not only the arts achievements that are taken into account but also the students’ ability to promote and support this area of the arts at St Margaret’s, give service to the school, participate fully, take initiative and be a role model to others.
All applications will be considered by the Arts Committee, consisting of the Curriculum Leaders and Teachers in Charge of Dance, Drama, Music, Debating, Technical and Visual Art, in consultation with other Arts staff, and final confirmation will be made by the Executive Principal. Considerations will include regional and national achievements and qualifications and student contribution to the Arts at St Margaret’s College, including participation in co-curricular groups, school events, service to the school and leadership initiatives.
Later this term there will be an opportunity for Year 7-10 girls to apply for Middle School Arts Awards (Badges and Honours.)

Performing Arts trip to New York 2020
There will be a meeting for all Year 11-13 girls and parents/whanau interested in this exciting trip taking place September/October 2020 on Monday August 5th at 5:30pm in the Charles Luney Auditorium. Please make every effort to attend this meeting if you are interested in coming on the trip as important information will be discussed and there will be time to ask questions.

Middle School Production: The Wizard of Oz
We are very excited to announce the dates for our Middle School Production for this year, The Wizard of Oz, which will be taking place in the Charles Luney Auditorium September 9,10 and 11. Rehearsals are going well, and Director and the latest addition to our Performing Arts team, James Tarbotton, is looking forward to starting ensemble rehearsals next week. The production involves over 100 girls from Years 7-10 and promises to be a spectacular showcase of our Middle School talent.

Speech and Drama Results
During the recent school holidays, a few St Margaret’s girls took part in the annual Christchurch Speech & Drama Competitions.
