Wellbeing: Social Intelligence

SMC —

The term Social Intelligence refers to a person’s ability to know what makes other people tick. They’re aware of the motives and feelings of themselves and others, and how to fit into different social situations.

They can feel comfortable and say the right thing whatever setting they are in. To show social intelligence is an important characteristic. It shows an ability to connect with people.

When being socially intelligent it is important to understand different perspectives and pay close attention to others by actively listening. At times we listen to reply and so are focused on what we will say when the person finishes speaking rather than listening to understand.

Daniel Goleman suggests that there are five aspects to focus on to improve our social intelligence. Self-awareness, Self-regulation, Empathy, Motivation, Social Skills, and Empathy. A practical tool we use at school with the students is before you respond THINK. Is it true? Is it helpful? Is it informative? Is it necessary and is it kind? If it passes this test then it is worth passing on. A particularly useful tool for the world of social media.

As David Caruso said “Emotional Intelligence is not the opposite of intelligence, it is not the triumph of heart over head - it is the unique intersection of both”
