Term 1 Sports Round-up

SMC —

All SMC sports teams had a fantastic start to the year, our girls show determination, professionalism and true sportsmanship in all areas. Here are some of the Term 1 highlights.

Athletics - Results of Canterbury Secondary Schools' Athletics held at Rawhiti Domain on Saturday 17 March
U15 Lily Cockram - 3rd 200m, 2nd 400m
Violette Perry - 2nd Shot Put, 1st Javelin, 1st Discus (new record)
U16 Fran Williamson - 2nd Long Jump
U19 Anoushka Chiswell - 1st= 100m, 1st 200m, 3rd Long Jump
Amelia Persson - 2nd 1500m
Victoria Wells - 1st 100m hurdles, 2nd 300m hurdles

U15 Violette Perry – 1st Discus & Javelin, 2nd Shot Put
U19 Anoushka Chiswell – 3rd 100m
Alice Ritchie – 1st Walk
Amelia Persson – 2nd 3000m, 3rd 1500m
Victoria Wells – 1st 100m Hurdles, 3rd 300m Hurdles
4 x 100m relay – 2nd Fran Williamson, Victoria Wells, Tara Keenan, Anoushka Chiswell

Cycling - Cylcing NZ National Track championships
Jenna Borthwick placed 1st in the U16 4000m Points race and the Keirin Sprint, 2nd in the 3000m Scratch Race earning her the overall individual omnium 1st placing in the U16 grade.

Equestrian – Harriet Laing and her pony made the big trek to Hastings for the NZ Horse of the Year event. They won the NZ Showhunter pony of the year out of 52 qualified entrants. They also won the NZ Showhunter highest points over 12 rounds of jumping
Makenzie Causer won the Jump for Cancer event that was held in Hagley Park recently. A wonderful achievement against some of the best ponies in the country and for a very good cause.

Hockey – An impressive number of our SMC girls have been named in the Canterbury U18 Hockey teams;
U18 Regional – Charlotte Lee, Pieta Surridge, Francesca Williamson
U18 Association – Sophie Calder, Anoushka Chiswell, Olivia Dyer, Isabella House, Meg James, Jordie Plunkett, Ruby Spencer
All the best for the season ahead.

Kayaking – Pieta Luthi has been named to compete at the Asia Pacific Regatta in the U16 grade.
She has also been selected into the NZ Junior Canoe Sprint team for the World Juniors in Plovdiv, Bulgaria from 26-29 July.

Netball – At Easter weekend the Te Waipounamu tournament was held in Gisborne.
SMC netballers Liyah Faga-ieti, Natashia Faga-ieti, Karereatua Williams and Lina Pale competed in the South Island teams.
Karereatua was named in the tournament team for the U15 grade. Lina Pale was selected to trial for the New Zealand Maori Secondary Schools’ team. Trials will be held this weekend in Otaki.

Rowing - congratulations to our U18 novice 8 and U16 8 crews who received bronze medals at Maadi.
U18 novice 8 - Georgia Dawson, Isla Fulton, Georgi McKay, Anna Wilson, Maddie Jeffries, Grace Glassey. Lydia Pye, Charlotte Gilray, Claudia Bethell (cox)

Big congratulations to Kate Harris, Gaby McKellar and Claudia Bethell who have been selected to trial for the South Island team.

Sailing – Alice Floyd competed at the South Island 420 champs and was placed:
- 1st South Island Boat
- 1st Girls crew
- 1st on aggregate (most consistent)
At the National champions Alice and her team mate won the girl’s category which earned them the right to represent New Zealand at the 420 World Championships in Newport, Rhode Island in August. There wlll be seven female crews from New Zealand attending this event.
Alice then went on to gain selection in the only girls’ team to represent New Zealand in Corpus Christi, Texas in July in an event designed to mirror the Youth Olympics for U19’s sailors

Swimming – At the Zone swimming sports Isabella Wilson Year 5 placed 2nd in 50m Freestyle and 3rd in 50m Breaststroke. Charlotte Coughlan Year 7 was 3rd in 50m Backstroke.
Isabella qualified for the Canterbury Primary School event.
The Canterbury Secondary Schools’ meet was held at Jellie Park on Wednesday 28 March.

Maisy, Sienna Jemma Burrowes and Emily Forrest – 3rd 12-13 years Freestyle relay
Violette Perry – 1st 14 years 50m Backstroke
Bridie Finch – 2nd 14 years 50m Freestyle
Violette, Bridie, Holly Bridgman and Abby Mason – 1st 14 years Freestyle relay (NEW RECORD)
Josie Persico – 3rd 15 years 50m Butterfly
Emily Barron – 1st 16-18 years 50m Backstroke

Touch – Our Super Touch team played at Belfast in the South Island Secondary Schools’ tournament. Great games with wins over Christchurch Girls, Southland Girls, Waitaki Girls and Marlborough Girls saw the team in 2nd position in their pool and a Top 4 placing giving them entry to Nationals at the end of the year.
A semi-final loss to Rangi Ruru meant a very creditable 4th placing for the tournament.

Volleyball – Congratulations to Olivia Parker who made the HP squad for South Island trials over the school holidays. Due to other sporting commitments Olivia is unable to attend the camp.
Our Senior A Team competed at the NZSS tournament in Palmerston North as part of summer tournament week. With 99 girls’ teams competing it was rewarding to see our girls finish in 25th position. A great way to end a successful season.

Water Polo - Our team of Annabel Norris, Taygen Salt, Aisha O’Malley, Hannah Price, Tayla Marshall, Violette Perry, Josie Persico, Ella Frazer, Jess Mills, Emma McClure, Georgia Reed, Jemma Burrowes produced some outstanding results to come away from tournament with the South Island championship title.
We look forward to hearing their results from the Div 2 National tournament being held in Rotorua from 14-17 April.
