Arts News

SMC —

We Are One will be our tribute concert dedicated to the victims and families of the terror attacks: Thursday, April 4th in the Charles Luney Auditorium, all welcome.

Twilight Concert-We Are One
Our first term performing arts extravaganza will be held Thursday, 4 April. This is an enjoyable evening where our groups showcase the dance, drama and music pieces they have worked on this term. We are dedicating this concert to the victims and families of the terror attacks, providing an occasion for our community to come together, with special songs and choreography created by our girls inspired by these events. All of our families and friends are warmly invited to attend, 5pm in the Charles Luney Auditorium. Koha on the door will go to the victim support fund.

Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival
This Saturday, March 30, three groups from St Margaret's College will be taking part in the annual Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Regional Festival at Middleton Grange. The festival requires students to select, direct and perform scenes from a Shakespeare play of their choosing. This year Cara Donaldson and Feya Durkin have directed a hilarious 5-minute extract from 'The Merry Wives of Windsor' set in the 1960s. Georgia Benton and Izzy Leighs have selected scenes to produce a 15-minute version of the darkly comical 'The Taming of the Shrew'. Kaitlin Burden, Annālida Jaeger, and Sam Capon have created a moving balletic interpretation of 'Henry VIII'. The girls have worked extremely hard and we wish them and their teachers Jenny May and Rosie McTaggart all the very best for the festival.

Orchestra Extravaganza
Next Wednesday evening April 3rd the orchestras from Rangi Ruru, Christ’s College and St Margaret’s are joining together for an ‘Orchestra Extravaganza’ concert. This is the third year that we have run this successful event, which is along the lines and ethos of our upcoming Choral event in June. Each school orchestra will present a bracket of music and there will be a combined concert band and string orchestra, the whole evening culminating in three combined orchestra items. The concert will be held in the Christ’s College Assembly Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Admission is free and no booking is required.

Tapping brilliance
We congratulate Molly Payne from Year 11 who competed in the Garden City Tapper’s Competition some days ago. Molly came first in her Jazz Solo, Musical Theatre Solo, Jazz Impromptu Solo, Slow Tap Solo and Speed Tap Solo, an outstanding achievement.

Tuakana-Teina in Drama
This week, the Year 1 Performing Arts class enjoyed watching performances of well-known fairy tales by the Year 10 Drama class. The Year 10 girls then taught the Year 1 girls their plays and they had a chance to perform for each other. Both classes really enjoyed this learning experience. It is great to see the Tuakana Teina (big sister-little sister) relationship being nurtured through the Performing Arts.

More Have-a-go days
Our Arts Council girls continue with this great initiative, holding sessions in the art rooms last week and this week in the Centre for Innovation. Girls from all year groups gathered around three large letters ART to colour and paint together, while many enjoyed playing with spheros and bee bots Tuesday lunchtime. These sessions are aimed at getting girls involved in the arts and having fun.

Arts Mentoring
The Arts Council team continue with their Arts Mentoring programme where Year 12 or 13 girls guide Middle School girls interested in learning something new or improving their skills in any arts area. The aim of this programme is for our Year 7-10 girls to make connections with girls involved in the arts in the senior school and for them to provide support, advice or even work towards a project (i.e. a performance, an artwork etc.) This is a really great experience for our girls as part of our Tuakana-Teina (big sister-little sister) philosophy. At the moment the Council need mainly mentors for Music/Singing, Drama, Dance, and Visual Art and those who have skills in more than one area are gold. Also open to staff!
If you are interested in being a mentor, please send Kaitlin Burden an email with:
- Your name and year group
- What area(s) of the arts you would like to mentor
- Why you want to be a mentor/why you think you would be a good mentor.
If you are in Year 7-10 and would like to find a mentor, you will need to fill out this survey to be paired up: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PBSJWLF

Site-specific Dance
Our Year 11 Dance students are working on site-specific dance, creating their own choreographies inspired by the architecture on our campus. Check out their efforts in the photos below.
