Tramping club

SMC —

The Tramping club has had its’ first outing and judging by the following write up from Nina Hayes in Y10 it sounds like everyone had a fantastic time.

Thank you to the teachers in charge, Sophie Beaumont and Genna McLaughlin for leading the way and spending time with the girls in this glorious way.

“On Saturday 13th March, the SMC Tramping Club embarked on our first adventure of 2021! We left school at 7:30 in the morning, arriving at the Bealey Spur track by Arthur’s Pass around 9am. In the carpark, it was so foggy, we could only see a few metres in front of us! So much for the great views, we thought, but 50 metres on those clouds were merely part of the view filling the valley beneath us and it was only blue skies from thereon. Making our way up the hill gave us the opportunity to appreciate the beautiful scenery of our country. With an even split of Year 9s and Year 10s, it was great fun to get to know the other girls on the trip and it was awesome eating lunch up at the hut. The highlight however had to be morning tea at one of the lookouts. We shared chocolate and other dreadfully unhealthy foods and admired the panoramic view we could see from there. We looked out over the Waimakariri River and out towards the Arthur’s Pass National Park, which made for stunning photos. It was a great opportunity to get out of our comfort zones and push ourselves with the support of our friends and awesome teachers. It was hard work at first but it was all worth it when we got to the hut and after a full-on day, we drove back to Christchurch, with multiple people falling asleep in the van ride home. Overall, it was so great to spend the day outside in the fresh air getting to know new people and enjoying some stunning scenery, and we all can’t wait for the next trip.” Nina Hayes
