Message from the Principal

Gillian Simpson —

Our thoughts are with all those families who are still recovering from the aftermath of the awful storms they've been through, particularly those on the West Coast and Nelson/Marlborough.

This same unseasonal February weather has also disrupted our programmes for community events, sports trials and competitions, swimming sports and camp activities for the Middle School.

This disruption is something we have grown used to as Christchurch people and I believe that uncertainty will remain the norm when organising our school calendar in the future. How we adapt and how we communicate internally and with you is crucial to ensuring plenty of opportunities for the girls as well as keeping whanau well informed and reassured. We are constantly reviewing our own procedures and readiness.

First and foremost in any decisions for programme change is the health and safety of our girls and staff on and off our campus. Secondly it is ensuring we can continue to offer the Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) programmes which we value so highly as pivotal in the development of well-rounded, flexible and resilient young women.

I appreciate and thank our staff who at this time of year put in endless hours to ensure a smooth start of year for all the girls in their academic programmes, pastoral care, EOTC, parent interviews and extracurricular sports and arts. Our aim is to provide opportunity for participation and experience for every girl in extracurricular activities. Participation and performance are both important for growth and development as well as success for those who are serious about their chosen activity and even wish to carry on through to elite level with regional and national representation.

Selection of sports teams and roles in performing arts groups and productions is always fraught with looking after some disappointed girls and parents. I ask please that while you may disagree with some selections that you see the appropriate person if you need some clarification and help with a way forward for your daughter. And we always appreciate constructive feedback on how best to communicate with you and support you and your daughter. Our theme for the next assembly with our girls and staff is around respect - respect for our environment and for each other in the SMC community. The 2018 theme of "Everyday Superstars" will reflect this too.

It is wonderful to see so many of you supporting your daughters at events and goal setting interviews and we look forward to seeing many of you at the regional SMC family events in your region soon.
