Junior School News

SMC —

The Junior School has always treasured its garden beds that are just behind our school. These have been a source of many wonderful fruits and vegetables in the past.

This year, we have extended our vege garden further by removing flax that was once around our seating areas and converting these into more vege garden space. This has been a wonderful learning opportunity and Year 1 and 3 have throughout the year, developed a learning program around the veges that we have planted.

To date, Year 1 and 3’s have harvested a variety of vegetables, learnt about seasons and growing, tasted veges and flavours from around the world. Paulette Double is the mastermind gardener supported by Nicki Douglas, and along with her Enviro Group in the Junior School have been taking care of this area. The size and health of the veges are impressive! Next, on the harvest menu are beetroots and celery along with broad beans. I suspect there will be a few more taste adventures and trials to be had very soon.

We are loving the gardens in the centre of our Junior School and we watch over them with pride. Next time you are passing by, pop in and see them, we would love to see you.
