Welcome to Term 3

Bridget Compton-Moen —

It has been a busy week, settling back into school routines. There have been many highlights and we are all enjoying being back together again.

A warm welcome to our newest girls and teachers. We are thrilled that Grace, Rachel, Mia, Bea, Zoya, Emily and Angelina, Mrs Lewis and Ms Ryan have joined us.

Term 3 is always such a fun term on a school’s calendar. There is always a lovely balance of rich learning alongside school events and celebrations as the weather gets warmer and the days get longer.

Next week we celebrate reading. Personal reading is something I am deeply passionate about for our children. Studies have shown time and time again that if you choose to do just one thing to help your children’s education, reading with them each day will have the greatest impact, and not just in literacy, across all their subjects.

You may have seen this American graphic before which presents research by Nagy and Herman. It shows the impact of reading just twenty minutes per day with our children. The evidence is clear that reading for twenty minutes per day will positively impact their success in all academic areas.

We, as parents, are all very busy. There are a lot of demands on our time. Particularly as our children get older and busier, it can be difficult to make time for reading but it is worth committing to this time together. And don’t think this is a practice just for our youngest learners; keep reading with your girls into middle school and even beyond. My daughter and I read novels together well into her high school years; they can also be a great conversation starter for important chats with our teens.

We are excited to celebrate reading next week. The Scholastic Book Fair in the school library is well worth a visit to buy fantastic reading material to enjoy together.

Have a great week, everyone.
