SMC —

As Term 4 goes whizzing by, our Senior Girls have gone on study leave. Car parks are slightly easier to find around the surrounding streets as the campus is a little quieter, but the world of sport has not slowed down here at SMC.

Wednesday competitions are well underway and so far the weather has been on our side. Although last Friday was almost too hot and our Touch girls had some very tough games as the mercury rose. Hopefully, they all found an ice cream on their way home. As usual please feel free to get in touch, if you would like us to report on your chosen sport with your achievements and news. louise.eder@stmargarets.school.nz

Archery
The Archery club is up and running with 11 girls in total having lessons at the Christchurch Archery Club at Rawhiti over six weeks. The girls enjoy learning new skills each week as they get the hang of aiming for the target.

Athletics
Lots of smiling faces were seen out on the field at our SMC Year 1-8 Athletics day and I know Maggies’ Cafe had a very busy day with all our lovely supporters visiting for a quick coffee or muffin. From Year 1-8 we congratulate all our athletes for their supreme efforts. The weather held for the most part of the day, until the first rumble of thunder put an end to events.

Cricket
Exciting news from our newly formed Cricket teams. A huge congratulations to our SMC Cricket girls who have participated over two days in the Ford Foundation Shield Tournament at Hagley Park. It is a new tournament to Canterbury this year and SMC had two teams entered. Both of our teams, SMC Red and SMC Green performed exceptionally well and achieved great results.
Our SMC Red team of Maddy Meates, Caitlin Parrett, Lily Keenan, Scarlett Kirby, Olivia Studholme, Georgiana House, Alice Davidson, Isabella Bullen, Niamh McKenzie, Bella Spear and Jemma Burrowes won the tournament and received the Ford Foundation Shield. St Margaret’s College has the privilege of being the first recipient of this shield. A huge congratulations to all the girls.
Our SMC Green team of Emily Chambers, Annabel Leete, Frankie Jack, Ruby Larcombe, Hannah Wareing, Paris Hague, Georgie Opie, Annabel Allen and Phoebe Spear also achieved a fabulous result and ended their tournament in 3rd place!! Awesome effort girls.
A fantastic result to have both of our teams in the top 4!!

Gymnastics
We have another successful gymnast amongst us at SMC, Lilly Eastmure Year 5 recently competed in two competitions. The Glen Iris Cup 2019 Melbourne for RG representing Olympia, where she earned herself the following places,
Hoop 2nd
Ball 6th
Freehand 4th
Overall 4th.

Followed by the Infinity AGG International Cup 2019 where she represented the Southern Ballet first-ever team from NZ competing in AGG taking 1st place. A huge congratulations to you Lilly.

Skiing
Mari Henderson Year 10 has had a very busy ski season. Judging by the photos she is one gutsy SMC girl out on the slopes.
“Mari skied well in the South Island High School Ski Champs at Cardrona - placing 10th in the Giant Slalom, the first of the "non-racing" girls. The top three girls were from the Austrian Ski Team so the competition was pretty tough. Mari was also 5th in the slopestyle competition at this event.
She also competed in the two Junior National Freeride Competitions placing 4th at The Remarkables and 2nd at Mt Olympus in the girls 14 to 18 year age group, which she is thrilled about. These results have given her a 3rd place ranking in the Oceania section of the World Junior Freeride Tour. This means Mari is currently ranked 3rd in the world rankings for the under 18 girls World Junior Freeride Tour, although this position may change once the Northern Hemisphere skiing gets underway.
In the October school holidays, Mari went on to compete in the 4 day Junior National Freeride Competition at Cardrona and was placed 3rd overall in her age group - 14 to 16 Girls.”
Awesome work Mari, well done.

Softball
New Zealand Junior White Sox Update and Squad Announcement
A huge achievement for our fabulous Trinity Mackley-Flutey Year 10. She has been named in the NZ U18 World Series squad. This is huge news for Trinity, we congratulate her on her journey so far and look forward to reporting on her in the future. Good luck Trinity.

Tennis
Once again Abby Mason has dominated the NZ Masters Tennis Tournament up in Wellington last week. A huge congratulations goes to Abby as our top seed beat Auckland’s second seed, Lucy Xu 6-1, 6-0 in the final, taking the U16 Girls Title.
As reported in the Otago Daily Times, “Her coach James Meredith said the tournament was a good lead-in for nationals and allowed players to match up against each other prior to the big event.”
Keep up the good work Abby.

Touch
Congratulations to the following girls who have made it into these Canterbury Touch teams for this season,
Canty U16 Mixed - Ally Booth
Canty U16 Girls - Cara Mustchin & Karereatua Williams
Canty U18 Girls - Georgia Reed

Sports Awards
Our 2019 Sports Awards took a different format this year. Instead of our usual dinner, we hosted parents, friends, staff and girls in the atrium, followed by awards in the Chapel on what was an exceptionally hot night. There were plenty of gleaming cups on display as the awards were announced one by one. Thank you to the sports council who made a lovely job of decorating the chapel and thank you to Helen Belcher and her team for making the awards happen.
Congratulations to all of our recipients.
