SMC —

Welcome to Term 4, wow how did we get here so fast? We hope that you all had a good break and got a chance to explore this beautiful country of ours. It is awesome the weather is warming up and we are about to go headlong into Summer Sport

It is fabulous looking out of the Sports Office window to see the pool is filled up, ready to go with a balmy temperature of 26degrees, along with the addition of new shade sails. We look forward to supporting you all on the sidelines of whichever sport it is you have chosen. As always please get in touch with us if you have any sporting news you would like to see in future newsletters. louise.eder@stmargarets.school.nz
Go SMC.

Basketball
Congratulations to our Year 7&8 A Basketball team who won the A grade competition at Pioneer Stadium at the end of Term 3.
Charlotte Prebble writes; “The Year 7&8 A and B Basketballers had a killer season which resulted in a win for the A's as they won the Year 7&8 Girl's A Grade. The B's also had a solid effort in the Y7&8 girls B Grade. It was awesome to see the girls arrive with positive attitudes to every game full of energy and banter. Thank you to our senior coaches who coached and supported these girls - Courtney Prebble, Sophie Ness and Millie Ness.”

Gymnastics
Lexie Boon recently competed in the Gymnastic Canterbury Championship and successfully defended her title, winning again in 2020. To do this she gained; 1st in freehand, 1st in rope, 2nd in ball and 1st in her age group then 1st overall for her level. She was also invited to compete in the group with the Seniors and they achieved a 2nd equal in the Championship. This follows from another successful club competition where Lexie gained the same results as above and therefore won the Level 4 Champion title. Lexie is very much looking forward to the 2021 season where a spot in the Canterbury team will be her next goal. To achieve this she first has to be in the top 20 in New Zealand before being offered a spot in the Regional representative team. Good luck Lexie.

Hockey
During the first week of the holidays, our hockey teams played their last game for the Canterbury Secondary School Competition. Our 1st XI team's performance in the final of the Secondary Premier League, against Christchurch Girls High, topped off an incredible season showing such great development in skill, confidence and gameplay. They came back from being behind one goal to force a penalty shoot-out that went through to sudden death. Unfortunately, we were unable to finish with the goal that counted, but we were so proud of each and every team member. The support from the school community and in particular from many Old Girls was incredible and we thank you all for backing us!
Our other results from the teams that competed in the Secondary School League competition on Wednesdays were:

2nd XI: 5th= in Div 1
White Team: 5th in Div 2
Red Team: 6th in Div 2
Green Team: 4th in Div 3
Blue Team: 6th in Div 3
Silver Team: 5th= in Div 4

These results are a reflection of a competition draw that was incomplete due to the restrictions caused by Covid, hence some play-off games were quick to change placement on the table. We are encouraged that we will only lose three Year 13 players throughout all of the teams and that we will all develop and be stronger in 2021. We would like to sincerely thank the coaches and managers for their time and effort in a challenging season. Your knowledge, support and encouragement are so critical to the development and growth of all our participants.

Junior School Hockey
It has been a great season for our St Margaret's College junior teams. Every player has developed in a season that has not been without its challenges due to Covid. Our Primary 11-aside Green team finished their season strongly and every girl developed as a player due to their own hard work and the expert knowledge of their coaches. We thank SMC old girl and former Blackstick, Amelia Gibson, and their student coach, Mezzy Surridge for the work they did with this team.
Our Year 6 Magic played in the Kiwi Sticks competition and had their first whole season with a goalie. These girls worked so well as a team and improved every week with their individual skills and positional play. Thanks must go to their student coaches Issy Story and Ava Coates who helped them all develop as players.
The Year 5 Wizards also played in the Kiwi Sticks Competition (No Goalie). They had some tough games this season but always played as a team and showed their passion for hockey. They had wonderful support from their coaches Chelsea Parrett and Piper Smith, as well as their awesome manager Mrs Double.
The Year 4 Stingers had a huge season in the Mini Sticks Competition, with some big battles which resulted in some great wins and the odd loss. They learnt a lot during the season on and off the field that will help them all in the future as players. They were very lucky to have student coaches Isabella House and Charlotte Gilray help them all develop throughout the season and were supported by their amazing manager Sarah Smallman.
The Year 3 Wildcats were little legends this season. They had no reserves and the six girls that made up the team were there every week giving it their very best. They all developed their skills throughout the season and supported each other on and off the field. Special thanks to their student coaches Niamh McKenzie and Georgiana House and of course their greatest supporter/manager, Mrs Calder.
Thank you also to all the parents who supported our teams through a very tricky season.

Representative Hockey
Congratulations to Isabella House, Issy Story and Mezzy Surridge who have been selected to represent Canterbury in the U18 team to travel to Dunedin in October to compete against Otago in the inaugural Mainland Cup. Also, congratulations to Olivia Dyer (Yr 13 2019) who has also been selected as goalie for this team. A number of Yr 9-11 girls thoroughly enjoyed participating in a Canterbury Hockey U15 Development Programme over 3 days at the end of the holidays. The students involved were: Neve Ballin, Shylah Bateman, Payton Edmondson, Nina Hayes, Amelia Frew, Tehya Laws, Poppy McNeill and Phoebe Spear. “We learnt about different types of positions in the circle and how to transfer the ball from defence to the midfield using outlet passes. We also did lots of basic drills involving passing, tackling, shooting, and picking the ball up on the move to create space and keep the game flowing. It was really great to see so many SMC girls taking part in this wonderful programme” - Neve Ballin (Yr 9)
Representative honours from our Old Girls continue to make us incredibly proud. Leah Butt, Millie Calder, Charlotte Lee, Phoebe Steele and Emily Wium have been selected to represent the Southern Alpiners in the NZ Hockey Premier League competition starting next month in Hamilton. Four women’s teams have been selected, three North Island teams and one South Island team. These teams include several Black Stick players and ex-international players.

Skiing
On a clear blue sky day, the South Island Secondary Schools Championships went ahead at Cardrona Alpine Resort. It was a great day out for all involved with our two competitors doing extremely well. Frustratingly, Mari Henderson missed out on a Bronze in the Ladies Giant Slalom by less than a second. Congratulations to Isla Fulton who won Gold in the Ladies Snowboarding SlopeStyle and Silver in the Snowboard Giant Slalom.

Awesome job both of you.

Junior Water Polo camp Y9/10
This term we have 2 Year 9/10 Water Polo Teams who will be playing in the Secondary Schools weekly competition. To start the season we held a Junior Water Polo camp on the last 2 days of the school holidays. Whilst the weather was a little chilly and the pool hadn't quite warmed up to maximum temperature, the enthusiasm and energy shown by the girls was awesome. The girls went through a combination of dry land work, pool sessions as well as video work.

A big thank you to Casie Bowry, our Junior head coach for all her organisation and coaching. Thanks also to Sharon McClure for assisting and also our 3 senior girls Ella Frazer, Josie Persico and Emma McClure for coming along and helping out.

Our Junior A team will be competing in the Junior South Island Tournament here in Christchurch from 26-29th November. We wish all our Water Polo players the best of luck for the season ahead.
