Old Girls' News

SMC —

We would like to take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge Old Girl Judith Todd who recently left a very generous gift in her will to St Margaret's to help future generations of girls enjoy the same education she did at SMC.

Judith Margaret Todd
7 March 1932 - 6 September 2018

Judith was Form 3 (Year 9) at St Margaret's College in1945 and throughout her life spoke of her college association and attendances at the various functions as well as her class reunions. She probably never missed any, it was a calendar highlight.

After leaving college, Judith worked in an accountant's office for a few years, progressing to become the well-respected secretary for the Matron in Chief of Christchurch Hospital, a position she held for many years until she retired.

Judith was a particularly active person and the grounding she received and the school values she acquired while she was at St Margaret's and from her family paved the way for her activities in adult life. Her stoic nature and orderly manner, insisting always on doing things properly, helped her to cope through the prolonged and stressful negotiations and eventual rebuild of her house following the earthquake, which she had finally moved into in 2017.

She loved her sports, particularly tennis and her brother recalls that she won a high jump cup at school. She was wonderful at crafts, her sewing and knitting skills were superb. She sewed and knitted for many people and for many charities over the years.

She loved music, the orchestra, the Court Theatre and exploring family history with the Early Settlers Association. Garden Club and playing mahjong were also favourite activities.

Judith had a strong faith and was an active member of St Barnabas Church, attending fellowship activities just a few days before her sudden death in September 2018 at the age of 86.
