Arts News

SMC —

Haere mai to the Arts for 2018!! We are feeling very positive and pumped for what is sure to be an exciting year for the arts at St Margaret’s. In this section we hope to keep you up to date with our girls’ achievements and news of any artsy goings on including information about arts events and activities.

Co-Curricular Arts Groups
The sign up for all our co-curricular arts groups has been very strong again this year and most groups are already under way. We are proud to offer around 40 different options in music, dance, drama, visual art, oratory and debating, innovation and technology. Most groups are open to all students from Year 7-13 and cater to all abilities and levels, some are for specific year-groups and we offer a few auditioned groups for those girls who excel in their fields. Groups are mostly lead by St Margaret’s staff members, some have senior student leaders and others are lead by itinerant staff. Practices take place before and after school and at lunchtimes and intervals.

Major Production: Alice!
St Margaret's College is proud to announce that the major production for 2018 is Alice! based on Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The show will open the last week of Term Two in the Charles Luney Auditorium. This all-girls production will be a celebration of the Performing Arts at St Margaret's College. There will be opportunities for girls from all year levels to be involved and we are looking forward to a whole school production where we set the platform for our girls to shine.

Our modern take on this classic tale is sure to delight audiences with large scale music and dance numbers, state-of the-art visual projection using LED screens and Carroll's favourite characters brought to life and re-imagined through spectacular costuming. This will be an incredible opportunity and Performing Arts staff are very excited – auditions for Years 7-13 have already started and will continue next week.

Junior School students will have the opportunity to be involved in Alice! but won’t need to audition. Information about Junior School involvement will be available later in Term 1.

Music Achievement

Congratulations to Year 12 girls Sujean In (violin) and Amy Chung (cello) who hold their places in the NZ Secondary Schools’ Symphony Orchestra this year alongside Year 12’s Meg Shatford (cello) and Julia Hughes (violin) from Year 10.

Multiple medals at Australian Dance Nationals

Congratulations to Year 11's Anna Cropp who brought home six medals from the Showcase National Dance Competition on the Gold Coast as a soloist and in teams.

Anna received a high silver award (jazz), three gold awards (broadway, contemporary and tap solo), a third placing (speed tap) and second placing (slow tap).

Supermodel, a piece from JK Dance School in which Anna danced alongside St Margaret’s Year 10 student, Molly Payne, won the wild card section of the Battle of the Stars, a concert showcasing the best selected acts.

Two other teams from JK were selected for Battle of the Stars including 42nd Street which Anna performed in. This piece placed second and the group was invited to participate in the World Championships in the UK (an invitation-only dance competition).

Molly also did extremely well as a soloist and also danced in Matilda in Battle of the Stars to place third.
