The Aoteroa Bike Challenge 2019

SMC —

SMC Staff bike challengers received first place in Christchurch from all Educational institutions (with up to 199 staff), second nationwide in the same category and ninth place in Christchurch overall!

The Aotearoa Bike Challenge is held in February and is a fun, national competition to experience the joys and benefits of riding a bike. This the second time we have entered an SMC staff team. We are proud to promote an activity that is good for our wellbeing and the environment and hope to encourage the girls and staff to hop on their bikes more often! Over 5,000 people and close to 300 organisations participated in Christchurch. The team has been going from strength to strength and it was great to see our principal and her husband on board this year in our group of cyclists who used their bikes for leisure, commuting, and transport.

In 2019 SMC had 40 staff out cycling. That meant:
• 6,500 km (2,100 commute kilometres)
• 754 kg C02 saved
Our top riders were Darren Atkin (Science faculty), Fionn Moore (GM), Tracy Fleete (Administration), Dr. Stefanie Hossbach (Head of Languages), Helen Belcher (Director of Sport), Leif Keane (IT), Annie Wynne (Director of Wellbeing), Chris Walker (Head of Humanities faculty), David Thompson (Art History), Mary Davison (Arts Coordinator), Sophie Beaumont (English faculty).
Congratulations and thanks for participating! I hope to see you back on your bikes in 2020 !
