Learning Out and About

Jennie Nairn - DP Teaching and Learning —

There was all sorts of excitement Wednesday morning with silhouettes of bodies found around the school. There was a Cluedo style math task and Mrs Mitchell’s Level 3 Calculus class were the investigators.

The class have been studying differential equations, a way of using math to describe change. Their focus has been on Newton’s law of cooling which is used in forensic science. Ms Ward, the visiting practising teacher gave each group a clue for where a body was to be found and once located, they found additional information from the forensic team about the body at the scene. They were given other information about the scene to help them determine when the murder occurred. All six groups in the class then had to work collectively to compile all the information to deduce who was actually responsible for all six murders. The girls were fully engaged and entertained. The fierce competition but also collaboration provided an outstanding practical task for this calculus class.
