Arts News

SMC —

Arts Week 2020 has showcased the fabulous and talented Arts students that we have here at SMC, it has also served to highlight the diversity of the arts here at SMC - from Debating to Robot racing, Divas Concerts to outdoor Dance and Chalk Art to Chamber music to name just a few!

Arts Chapel saw the debut performances of our Middle School and Y8 rock bands - the performances were utterly fabulous! Well done girls!

Our debating team of Lucy Jessep, Hattie Compton-Moen and Elizabeth Cross took on the Christ’s College team in the Showcase Debate who successfully argued against the argument that “this house would bring back duels to the death”!

Arts Week will conclude with the final two SMC Divas performances and the annual Arts Assembly which will be a celebration of the arts and we will recognise the achievements of the girls with the awarding of pockets and honours - details of these awards will be included in the next newsletter

IB Art Exhibition
Congratulations to our 4 extremely talented Y13 IB Arts students Zelle Logan, Sophia Lawrence, Jade Tiller and Valeria Bankovskaya on their successful exhibition. As part of the IB requirements, the girls had to create a series of works across a variety of different media. Throughout this journey, the girls have been mentored by Ruve Crawford, Head of Design at SMC

Liquescent - the SMC Penguin
Our Y7 & Y8 Art Extension students are taking part in the 2020 Wild in Art programme - this year is is Pop up Penguins!
Liquescent, our penguin sculpture was inspired by 'The sustainability of rising water levels in Antarctica' Year 7 & 8 Art Extension students looked into a range of ideas; SMC school Virtues, abstract patterns and environmental issues affecting animal life. These ideas were then developed into the holistic final design, bringing the key visual elements together under the umbrella concept to do with rising water levels.
Pop up Penguins will see 50 large penguin sculptures, sponsored by companies and decorated by established and emerging artists, along with up to 65 little penguins, decorated by schools as part of the Pop Up Penguins Learning Programme. Once decorated the penguins will be on display across Christchurch - The penguins will highlight themes like climate change, community, Antarctica, creativity, innovation and exploration. After 10 weeks, out and about in Christchurch, the street sized penguins will be auctioned to raise money for Cholmondeley Children’s Centre.

 Jack Shatford
The Year 12 NCEA Drama class welcome guest tutor Jack Shatford who studied at The Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts. Jack is teaching the class a musical theatre item from 'Come from Away.' What an exciting way to end the term!

Theatre Sports Success
Congratulations to Feya Durkin who was one of 25 students selected from the Regional Senior Theatre Sports competition to audition for the Scratch Team this Sunday at The Court Theatre. Feya auditioned very well and was selected as one of the top 5 students who formed The Scratch Team.
And the good news is ... The Scratch team won the competition!!! This is the first time in the history of the competition that a Scratch Team has won! Congratulations Feya - this success is so deserved as you have been a committed Theatre Sports team member and leader since your early Years at SMC! We are so proud of you!!

From Feya….On Sunday, I had the opportunity to attend a workshop audition for the theatre sports scratch team, along with Georgia Lassen, and Rosie Milne (although she was unable to go). It was a pretty intense two hours of auditions, and at the end of it, I was fortunate to be selected into the final team, along with four other people who were from St Andrew’s, Girl’s High and Burnside High School. We had about an hour to train together (and do a BK run) before we hit the stage and competed against three other teams, from Riccarton High, Christ’s College, and Burnside. The competition was tight but we managed to snag the trophy, making Court Theatre history as it was the first time a scratch team had won the competition!

Chamber Music Festival
Congratulations to the Beati Trio who came 3rd in the Christchurch School of Music Festival Senior Ensemble section.
