Diana Patchett —

Coming home to the aroma of fresh-baked double chocolate chip biscuits is pretty hard to beat, but that is a bonus of SMC boarding life.

This week, boarding schools across the country are celebrating National Boarding Week. Boarders are reaching out to connect with others and spreading the good word on the benefits of a ‘home-away-from-home’ at school. Our boarding family took to the kitchen and baked up a storm to deliver boxes of deliciousness to their fellow boarders across the city.

There are over 10,000 students enrolled as boarders in 79 schools across New Zealand, each with their own special character and situation. For us, the Boarding School is an integral part of the St Margaret’s family and we cherish the contribution our regional and international students bring to life at SMC. I especially look forward to popping in to share a meal, to talk horses and to revel in the glorious energy of boarding life. You think one or two girls around the dinner table provide entertainment? Try 170!

Of course, it’s not all smooth sailing, but what family is? Boarding life will certainly have its ups and downs, and we are not apologetic for that, as that is life. What we do ensure is that our girls are loved and that we will do the very best we can to provide a ‘home life’ that brings out the best in them.

For all of our girls, there are tremendous opportunities for personal and social growth to be realised as a boarder. The development of independence, time management, tenacity, teamwork, resilience, communication and more are all to be gained, as well as a lifelong connection to 169 sisters.

For our day girls who might feel like they are missing out, we are pleased to offer flexi-boarding at SMC (providing there is space available). This can be a terrific option for sportswomen, for parents who travel or for those girls who would simply like the chance to take advantage of the benefits of living on campus. SMC has a pretty incredible backyard!

The family nature of St Margaret's College is something that has set it apart since we were founded, and our boarding school has a proud extension of that for over 100 years. This week, double chocolate chip cookies are definitely an added bonus.
