SMC —

It's been a busy couple of weeks in the Sports Department with girls participating all over the country, and the world!

Huntley Exchange
On Monday this week we had the pleasure of hosting Year 7/8 students from Huntley School. Huntley is an independent preparatory school for Years 3-8 boys and girls. Our Year 7/8A Netball team had a great win over the North Island girls while our hockey girls had a tough battle against mixed teams.
Huntley School have a tour to the South Island every two years and it was a great to be able to host them again this year.

Quad Tournament
35 students along with staff and coaches travelled to Dunedin to contest the annual Winter Quadrangular tournament against Columba College, Craighead Diocesan and St Hilda’s Collegiate. The girls were fortunate to be billeted with the St Hilda’s students and enjoyed their time meeting new people and creating lasting friendships. As was to be expected the competition was tight in match ups in Badminton, Debating, Hockey and Netball.

Most Valuable Player awards were presented to:
Badminton – Gem Krairiksh
Debating – Aisha O’Malley
Hockey – Charlotte Lee
Netball – Eniselina Pale

Results
Badminton – 2nd
Debating – 3rd
Hockey – 1st
Netball – 2nd=

Kayaking
Pieta Luthi has returned from Bulgaria where she represented New Zealand in the New Zealand U18 Junior team at the World Championship Canoe Federation Canoe Sprint event for U18’s and U23’s. Pieta finished with a very credible 5th placing in a semi-final and will come home having gained valuable competition experience.

Rugby
Emma Anderson, Lucy Jenkins and Ally Taylor have been competing in the Christchurch Women’s club team this season. The team were the winners of the Women’s Premier competition winning their final game 59-17 against Canterbury university.

Water Polo
To add to the impressive list of SMC superstars who travelled far and wide during the school holidays to compete on a national and international level

Our Middle School had three girls in the Under 14 Canterbury rep team at the water polo Pan Pacific Games. In a huge international competition held against many good teams, including a very strong contingent from Australia, the Under 14 Canterbury team came 18th in their group of 28 teams.

Congratulations to Lucy Hamilton (Y9), Jemma Burrowes (Y9) and Emma McClure (Y10) - great effort in a tough tournament.
