Learning Out and About

Understand and Train That Brain - Online Exam Preparation Opportunity. Studying to remember information for exams - how do we do it?

While a contentious issue when the reality is we have constant contact with ‘knowledge’ through the web, it is, however, a necessity when sitting tests or exams and developing knowledge that needs to be recalled to assist with problem-solving and application situations. This does begin at various year levels and throughout the school year through specific learning programmes, and in each curriculum area. It is, however, something each individual needs to invest time in so preparation is vital.

The Year 9 students study the brain in science so they can understand more about how the brain works, what steps to take to assist the memory process with techniques such as clumping and mnemonics. Understanding how to keep the brain healthy through good nutrition and sleep develops a holistic appreciation of how to look after this vital part of the body. The Year 11s look at some study strategies early in the year during Step-Up as an introduction to the senior school, then again with more strategies and time near the Term 3 exams and externals at the end of the year. Year 12 and 13s are supported through their tutors and deans with tips at key times of the year. The Academic Committee also share ideas and motivating messages through student notices and the Academic Board in the WS block.

There are numerous websites available to assist students to support what is learnt in School around studying for assessments. There is however a new resource from Patrick Sherratt, an expert who has visited the school in previous years to work with students and parents. With the recent experience of successful remote learning, Patrick has designed an online programme to help students understand and learn specific strategies to support their preparation for examinations. Students work through at a time that best meets their needs and can be revisited for revision. Parents and students join directly with Patrick, not through the school. You may wish to consider this as an additional but very useful opportunity for your daughter. Details are below:

Passing Exams Online Learning Programme - $19
