Sports News

SMC —

We are already half-way through Term 2, which is a scary thought. The weeks certainly do fly by, as the results from all our girls sporting achievements flood the office on a daily basis.

We would like to acknowledge not only our girls and their efforts, but all of their coaches, managers, staff, supporters and families. Without the whole package being present within a game or at an event, it just wouldn’t be possible. The mammoth effort to transport girls to and from games, practices and events is huge. So a big, heartfelt thank you, goes out to all those who make sport such a wonderful part of SMC.

Cross Country
It was a perfect day for racing, we took our team of 22 girls out from Year 5-8 for the Independent Zone Cross Country. Through smiles and tears, all the girls completed the challenging course of ups and downs and uneven terrain.
Top 6 results:
Year 5 - Charlotte Maxwell 3rd
Year 6 - Victoria Gomes Lira 4th
Year 7 - Sophie Booth 3rd & Sophie Maxwell 6th
Year 8 - Chloe McNeill 6th
These girls will now compete at the Canterbury Primary Schools' Cross Country on 19 June at Halswell Quarry, we wish them luck.

Cycling
As reported in the last newsletter, we have an awesome group of girls who make up our SMC Cycling team this year. We now have a photo of them all below. Watch this space.

UC Education Secondary Schools Mud Run 2019
Get Muddy, Get Moving, Get Amongst It!
Brought to you by Sport Canterbury

The UC Education Secondary Schools Mud Run offers secondary school students the opportunity to be involved in a unique event that promotes participation, teamwork and fun, whilst being active. Teams of up to four complete the 5km off-road obstacle course together. Taking on mud pits, slides, hurdles and tyre towers. It’s a fun run like no other. This event was established after the Christchurch earthquakes in an environment where many of the sports grounds and clubs were closed, providing a physical activity opportunity that is inclusive of all abilities and fitness levels.

The ever-popular mud run is coming around again. Why not make the most of the winter weather and get stuck into the mud. Get a team together, dress up and enter, it will be heaps of fun. Teams can be between 2 and 5 people, but only teams of 4 are eligible to win prizes.

Sailing
Alice Floyd Y13 is having a very exciting time training and living up in Auckland.
She writes;
“I am currently up in Auckland, boarding at Diocesan School for girls while I train with my new sailing partner,  Alice Haslett who lives up here. We have teamed up together and qualified for the 2019,  420 World Championships, in July in Vilamoura, Portugal. We leave on the 25th of June. While we are in Europe we will also be attending the 420 Junior Europeans in Spain later that month. For both Alice and I, it is our last chance to do well at a youth class world championships, so we are training hard and endeavour to leave everything out on the race course. We are currently training very intensely against the current boy's world champs and are beating them from time to time! Living in Auckland gives me access to many more resources than I would have had in Christchurch. It means that Alice and I can train more often, and more consistently. Being in a sailing environment all the time is pushing me to want to do better. Living up in Auckland has been an adventure in itself, tackling a new school, new city, and very intense training has been difficult, but I am enjoying the challenge and cannot wait to get over to Europe to see how we measure up against the rest of the world. However, I am looking forward to returning back to Christchurch in August.”

Alice, we wish you and your partner, Alice Haslett, all the very best for your competition in Portugal. Go SMC and go NZ.

Sporting Multiples
Doubly talented and triply competitive. Four sets of twins and one set of triplets make up many of the sports teams at SMC. Liyah and Tash Faga-ieti (Y13) play sevens rugby, netball, softball, touch, basketball and athletics; Emma and Olivia Parker (Y12) row and play netball, basketball, volleyball and tennis; Sophie and Millie Ness (Y12) play basketball, netball, tennis and volleyball; Poppy and Chloe McNeill (Y8) compete in running, athletics, hockey, touch, duathlon, cross country, swimming and tennis; and triplets Lucy, Amelia and Maddie Mitchell (Y6) play netball, cross country, swimming, gymnastics and hockey.

Playing and practising with your sister is an added bonus for all. Poppy and Chloe point out they can support each other on and off the playing field. Identical twins Sophie and Millie say their similarities come in useful to confuse the opposition. While triple threat – Lucy, Amelia and Maddie admit to being very competitive with each other to which big sister Grace strongly agrees!! Although sometimes sharing friends can be a downside all agree - competing, playing and supporting your sister is the best!!
