SMC —

Welcome to the start of Term 3. We hope that you have all had a chance to rest and rejuvenate yourselves in preparation for the term ahead. As always not everything stops during the holidays. We have had many of our girls representing St Margaret’s, Canterbury and New Zealand over the last two weeks, travelling overseas and around the country.

Girls have gone on to be named in upcoming events as representatives for their chosen sport. We are so proud of all our athletes, we know how hard they work and seeing them each week as ambassadors for St Margarets Sport, is an absolute pleasure to watch. As always please contact us in the sports office with any sporting news you would like included in our next newsletter louise.eder@stmargarets.school.nz

Basketball
Our Basketballers have had a busy season so far with some great wins in competitive environments. It is good to see so many of our SMC girls enjoying the game, both on and off the court. Basketball, like so many sports, needs the whole team to support the players and to provide bench duty and referees for other games. A huge thank you to those girls who have stepped up each week to help out. We have lots to look forward to this term with tournaments coming up fast.
As mentioned in a previous newsletter, we had five of our Basketballers named in Canterbury Representative Teams. Here is how a couple of them have got on so far;
Lia Jenkins Year 8, reports, “ I went on a U15 Mainland Basketball Tournament. We travelled to Blenheim and played 4 teams in our pool. We made it to the finals with a tight semi against Nelson and we ended up coming second.” Lia that is fabulous news, congratulations to you and your U15 Mainland Team.
Evie Leeson Year 8, writes, “I went up to Tauranga in the holidays for the U15 Basketball Nationals for the Waitaha B Team. We had a couple of wins and finished 14th which is a great result as we were in one of the hardest pools and the top placing B team. The games were hard, but I learnt heaps and really enjoyed it.”
Well done girls and good luck to all our Ballers for the rest of the term.

Cycling
Big congratulations to Jenna Borthwick, winner of the U17 Time Trial and Road Race in convincing style, at the South Island Secondary Schools Cycling Champs last weekend and to the rest of the SMC Cycling Team.

Futsal
Emily Lambie Y11 played in the Futsal 16th Grade at Nationals in the July holidays. It was held in the ASB Sports Centre in Wellington, over three days. Emily says, “ We placed 5th which was around mid-table. I was one of the younger people in the team so it was a great experience to play with the older more experienced players.” Congratulations Emily, those new experiences are so vital to you as an athlete.

Hockey
Congratulations to the following girls for their selection into Canterbury Hockey Representative Teams,
Canterbury U15 A Emelia Surridge, Niamh McKenzie.
Canterbury U15 B Molly Williams, Anneliese Millard.
We wish you luck with your coming games.
Meanwhile, Canterbury U18 Girls Teams had some great results in the holidays. The U18 A team played up in Wellington and brought home a Bronze medal. The U18 Association team played in Timaru and came home with a Gold medal. Congratulations to both these teams and all the players involved. We are pleased to claim eleven of these players who are from right here at St Margarets. Canterbury U18 A Bronze, Sophie Calder, Anoushka Chiswell, Olivia Dyer, Olivia Patterson, Francesca Williamson

Mud Run
We had a record 50 girls and five staff complete the Secondary Schools mud run a couple of Sundays ago. By the look of the photos, everyone involved had a great time and got into the spirit of the run. Well done to everyone, hope you enjoyed the warm showers when you got home.

A great reward Caitlynne for your performance throughout the tournament!!! Well done.
Also in the first week of the holidays, Lina Pale played in the Chch U19 Team at Nationals in Invercargill. The team were placed 4th after some fierce netball with Lina being named in the tournament team. Congratulations Lina.
Two Christchurch teams played fantastic netball in Auckland during the holidays, with seven of our St Margarets’ girls in the two teams. Playing in the Christchurch U17 Red Team at Nationals were, Laura Mann, Georgia Reed, Ellie Withers, Jess Milne. This team was placed 7th overall. Playing in the Christchurch U 17 Black Team was Caroline Wells, Mia Allison, Jaymee Smith.
Georgia Reed writes;“During the second week of the holidays Laura Mann, Jess Milne, Georgia Reed and Ellie Withers (who were in the Under 17 Christchurch Red team), and Mia Allison, Jaymee Smith and Caroline Wells (who were in the Under 17 Christchurch Black team), travelled up to the Under 17 Netball Nationals held in Waitakere, Auckland. It was a fantastic week where there were many talented athletes on display. The challenging weather made the tournament even better, and there was lots of valuable experience gained over the 8 games that were played.
Forty teams competed, with the Christchurch Red team improving their placing to 7th from 17th last year, and the Christchurch Black team debuting at the tournament for the first time finishing in 27th Place. It was impressive to see that Christchurch Netball Centre was able to send two teams away this year and to have 7 players from St Margaret's representing Christchurch at under 17 level is an amazing feat.”
As Georgia said, it was fantastic that two Christchurch teams were able to go. Congratulations to our seven girls who played in those teams.

Tennis
Abby Mason has an exciting time ahead. She will be playing for New Zealand at the Oceania Junior Tennis Championships as part of the ITF World Tennis Tour. Abby will be travelling to Fiji in August. We wish her lots of luck and look forward to hearing how she gets on.
Ruby Young, Year 9, is another one of our talented SMC girls who was selected to represent New Zealand in the U13 Australian Teams Championships. Ruby travelled to the Gold Coast in the holidays and played some great tennis. Ruby reports;
“I played in the New Zealand Team and we played all of the different states of Australia as well as teams from some other different countries. My team did well, we placed 4th in the 13&U age group. As a team, we played Western Australia, Pacific Oceania, Australian Capital Territory, Northern Territory, Queensland and South Australia. This event was held in Queensland and played on clay. Then I played in the Rod Laver Lead In, which was held in Brisbane. I placed 5th defeating the No.6 seed 6-1 6-0 in the first round. I then competed in the Rod Laver Junior Championships. I played well and competed hard but unfortunately didn't place.”
What an amazing opportunity to play against so many different players and in warmer conditions than we have been having here. Well done Ruby, keep up the hard work.

Water Polo
Congratulations to our Year 7 & 8 water polo team who won their division of the Canterbury term two competition. Awesome work girls!
We have four talented SMC girls playing Water Polo for Canterbury in both the U21 Team and the U18 Team. Josie Persico, Ella Frazer, Hannah Price and Taylah Marshall.
The U21 Canterbury Water Polo Team played in the last week of Term 2. They had a great result coming 4th. Then in the first week of the holidays, the U18 Canterbury Water Polo Team played at Nationals up in Auckland. Congratulations on coming 5th girls.
Josie Persico then stayed up in Auckland for a training camp for a couple of days, before leaving for Sydney. Josie is in the NZ U18 Water Polo Team. She is a fabulous ambassador for not only our school but also for New Zealand. Josie says,” It was an excellent experience playing out of New Zealand as it had quite a different feel. The players were amazing and the competition was tough. We had lots of fun and it was great to meet some different players and make new friends.” We also had one of our old girls playing in the team with Josie, Annabel Norris. Josie has earnt herself a rest from Water Polo as she now turns her attention back to Netball.
