Arts News

SMC —

Although the school is a lot quieter with the senior students on study leave, the junior students continue to enjoy learning in the Performing Arts.

Here are some photos from the Y1 and Y3 Music classes. The students have enjoyed singing and dancing with the parachute as well as exploring the sounds of the percussion instruments.

Itinerant Music Concert
The students and staff were treated to a very special concert last week - the girls that have music lessons here at SMC gathered to perform in the Charles Luney Auditorium. Some of the girls have only been learning a musical instrument for a few months and for many it was their first time performing on such a big stage - well done to all of the girls that took part.

Georgia Returns!
Gorgeous Old Girl Georgia Hardy visited the Year 9 Dance classes last week. It has been wonderful for the girls to hear about Georgia's experience in Dance during her time at SMC and the girls have loved having her visit. Both classes performed their Contemporary Dance choreography for Georgia, showing their understanding of the dance genre. We always welcome these special visits from past students.

SMC takes the Nga Kete Cup for Debating
Teams of Year 9 & 10 girls from Canterbury schools came together to debate in the annual Nga Kete Debating Tournament today.
Everyone had an excellent day debating such topics as banning Tik Tok, casting diverse actors & actresses and instituting a beauty tax.
SMC's two teams both won their first two debates and ended up facing each other in the final. In the end, the Green team consisting of Emily Harris (Y10), Hannah Higginson and Anna Babington (Y9s) beat the Y10 Red team of Anita Avia, Claudia Hundleby and Hannah Wylie.
Well done to all the debaters and especially our excited winners! It's great to see such potential in our Middle School debaters.

Self in the Environment - Virtues and Hauora

The Y10 Visual Art Students have been creating photographic images and graphic design solutions using either the SMC virtues or Maori Hauora as inspiration. The students have used the work of NZ and international photographers and designers as models for this project.

The exhibition will be online for the next month and can be viewed at https://publish.exhibbit.com/gallery/32799829/solo-gallery-42644/
