Winter Tournament Week Round Up

Basketball
Intermediate A finished in 5th place after 4 days of competition at the South Island Junior tournament in Timaru. Some great play and development from Lola Astle, Rosa Davidson, Tayla Hardy, Samantha Hood, Trinity Mackley-Flutey, Emily Milner, Cara Mustchin, Charlize Stick, Olive Tuipulotu, and Karereatua Williams.

Our Senior team comprising Madison Eder, Emily Evans, Casey Bennett, Alex Cooper, Millie Ness, Sophie Ness and Kate Zarifeh who were joined by Tayla Hardy and Olive Tuipulotu attended the Schick Southern Cup in Ashburton. This was the first time the South Island tournament had been split into two different events and SMC were keen to take advantage of the closer to home venue.

The girls recorded some great wins over Nelson, Hagley, Roncalli and Papanui before advancing to the semi finals.

A win over Hornby saw the girls match up against Lincoln in the final. A close loss however the girls should be very proud of their 2nd placing.

Hockey
Our mighty 2nd XI team of Cara Donaldson, Molly Dougherty, Charlotte Idiens, Tara Keenan, Molly Leckie, Abby Mason, Gaby McKellar, Niamh McKenzie, Evie McPerson, Chelsea Parrett, Alice Ritchie, Laura Simcock, Piper Smith, Issy Story, Emelia Surridge were joined by Grace Horsbrugh. Following an unbeaten record in the Canterbury Hockey weekly competition the girls continued their fine form to remain unbeaten for the season, winning the Chris Arthur Cup in Ashburton.

Full credit to these girls who were specifically mentioned for their comradeship, sportsmanship and high skill level throughout the week.

The 1st XI contested the Federation Cup in Whangarei. With some close wins under their belt the girls progressed to the ¼ finals where they had a tough match up against the eventual winners, Iona College.

The play off for 5th – 8th positions was against St Cuthbert’s. Unfortunately, the result didn’t go our way but the girls were determined to win their last game of the tournament against Whangarei.

Despite being a draw at full time, our SMC girls showed a huge amount of resilience and courage in the drop off play and finished the tournament in 8th position.

Netball
Our Senior A team were in Dunedin for South Island Secondary Schools’ tournament where 80 teams played over 4 days. After placing at the top of their initial pool the team had some tough match ups with two losses of 1 and 3 points respectively and eventually finished in 9th position. Special mention to Lina Pale who was named as a talented player in the A grade.
