Year 12 IB Bonding and Learning

Renee Ren - Y12 —

Last week myself and the other Year 12 IB freshmen of the IB Diploma programme cheerfully made our way through the journey of IB Camp.

Before arriving at Hanmer Springs Forest Lodge where we were staying for 3 days, we stopped at the public library first. We separated into two groups and debated whether or not the hot pools are safe. The debate turned out well and was interesting to listen to according to Mr Clarke, our beloved TOK and English teacher.

Soon after lunch, we indulged ourselves with some English and TOK analysis and discussions. Followed by stream study, the climax of the day, where we collected and investigated samples from the stream. Those tiny living creatures triggered sighs of astonishment from us and educated our curious brains about their habitat.

Over the next two days, we were introduced to the use of pseudo-science in economic markets. Gaining an understanding of this, we created and presented strange pseudo-scientific products that were creative and entertaining to our class. We then kickstarted our journey of Extended Essay, which is a detailed research paper that will be done throughout our IB career. After all the brainy literary work, Mrs Rouse allowed us to relax and explore the town on the last night before leaving. We spent the evening bonding with our fellow IB sisters not only by immersing in the Hanmer Springs hot pools together, but also by having a fine dinner with each other.

We came back to Christchurch on Wednesday afternoon with satisfaction and having gained valuable experience from the camp. Thank you to Mrs Rouse, Miss Rod, Dr Chapman and Mr Clarke, for their great teaching and care of us noisy kids, without any of them we would not have had such a smooth journey in IB camp.
