Sports News

SMC —

Wednesday sport has now finished for the year. Iit is always a very short but sweet blast for Term 4 sport amongst so many other events.

Right now we are in the last full week of school for 2020 and many of our athletes are still competing in SISS Junior Volleyball in Invercargill, SISS Junior Water Polo, CSS Junior Tennis and CPS Athletics, all in Christchurch. We are following their pursuits with interest and wish them all the best. There will be an extra newsletter next week so that we can do a roundup and publish the results.

Year 9-10 Colours and Senior Honours
“The Sports Committee reserves the right to make decisions where it considers exceptional circumstances are involved”

Therefore, the committee will now consider any current and new Colours and Honours applications, if there are instances should the pandemic not have occurred, where the athlete would have otherwise met sufficient criteria to be successful in being awarded their Year 11-13 Honours or Year 9-10 Colours award.
For example - an athlete would still be required to have achieved selection and performance criteria within the required timeframe but may have been unable to attend an event due to cancellation during the pandemic period.
Students who have not previously applied, are invited to submit their application along with supporting evidence by completing the attached application form and returning to the Director of Sport by 4pm Monday 30 November.

Please note - all Honours applications must include a completed logbook, showing hours of service to SMC Sport verified by a Convenor or the Director of Sport, and with attendance, behaviour, values and uniform standards signed off by the respective Dean.

Application forms are available from the Director of Sport.

Athletes Foot
Thank you to Simon Rells from the Athlete's Foot who came to present sporting goods to some of our SMC girls as part of the rewards programme offered to schools.

Indoor Football
St Margaret's has joined with Rangi Ruru for a very localised tournament in Term 4. Three SMC teams and one Rangi team are playing a round-robin every Wednesday afternoon this term in what has been a hard-fought competition so far. The teams have turned out to be evenly matched and feature a range of abilities, from those just starting out with the game to more seasoned footballers. Games have been played in excellent spirit, with plenty of goalmouth action every game. The competition is currently led by SMC Red, ably captained by Katherine Babington, but the margins are fine and the competition is still anyone's to win. Chris Walker

Polo
Congratulations to Skye Turner who has made the South Island Schools Polo Team. They are playing the North Island Team on November 29. Good luck for the match.

Sport Accelerator
Applications for the 2021 Sport Accelerator Programme are now open

The Sport Accelerator Programme runs across 3 levels
Level 1- Year 10
Level 2- Year 11
Advanced- Year 12 and 13
This programme is open to any girl who has an interest in sport and would like to learn more about training, loading, recovery, nutrition, sports psychology, time and energy management as well as hear from top sportsmen and women.
Each level builds on the information learnt the year before, however, girls can join the programme in year 11 and 12 and easily catch up.
Girls who are already in the programme do not need to reapply but just need to email Julie Seymour in the Sport Department and let her know if they will or will not be continuing in the programme for 2021.
For those new to the programme- sessions are held in the lunch hours ( 3-4 sessions per term ) The cost is approximately $120 for the year. This can vary a little depending on the number of girls involved and the cost of the speakers. All our speakers are outside providers who are experts in their fields, many of them ex top sportsmen and women.
Application forms can be collected from the Sport Office or an electronic version will be posted on Student Notices. Please return applications before school finishes on December 2nd.

Tennis
Well done to our Year 9 Red team who came second in the Division One Wednesday competition, losing a well-fought final to Cashmere. Also to our other Year 9 team who came 5th also in Division One.
