Wellbeing at SMC

SMC Wellbeing —

Our commitment to maintaining and improving the wellbeing of our students, staff and community continues in 2020 with the introduction of a fortnightly Wellbeing Theme.

These themes were collated by our Wellbeing Committee last year, drawing inspiration from the five key elements of Character, Faith, Service, Hauora, and Headspace.

Every fortnight in the newsletter we will highlight the upcoming theme in hopes that this might stimulate discussion, action and reflection at home. The theme will be introduced to the girls (and staff) through a variety of means, including classroom and tutor time, Monday Chapel services, and assembly messages.

We would love your involvement in this wellbeing initiative, so if you have any suggestions or feedback on the themes, please let us know.

As we welcome 830 students to St Margaret’s College, we acknowledge the trepidation some new (and returning) students may feel as they embark on a fresh school year, so we will begin the year reminding ourselves of the value of BRAVERY.

Let us encourage each other to be brave in the face of new challenges. We look forward to supporting the girls to approach unfamiliar situations and uncertainty with courage and forethought and have the independence of spirit to explore new roles, ideas, and strategies.

Not all acts of courage need to be globally renowned to be defined as brave. Here are some examples of ways to practice bravery in daily life.

  • Striking up a conversation with someone new.

  • Trying a food that you've never tried before.

  • Doing something that might be a little risky such as trying a new sport or joining a new club for the first time.

  • Standing up for a person who is being picked on.

  • Helping out a person or animal in need, even if it might put you in a little bit of danger.

  • Standing up for yourself.

  • Doing something by yourself for the first time.

  • Signing up for a programme or class that intimidates you.

  • Checking out a charity, volunteer program, etc. to see if you can get involved.
