Cantamath Success

SMC —

Last Wednesday 28th August the annual interschool Cantamath competition took place at Horncastle Arena. SMC had teams entered in each year group.

Our Year 7 & 8 teams did extremely well. After many weeks of hard work and extra practice sessions during lunchtimes, our Year 7 team, comprising of Emily Chambers, Millie Edwards, Zara Gamble and Maia Stanbury competed well and scored 65 points. Our Year 8 team of Charlotte Coughlan, Holly Ross, Hannah Wareing and Emily Zhou, got excruciatingly close to the 100 points “Golden Ticket”, finishing on 95 points with the final question in their hands. They ended in 3rd equal place, the only all-girls team to make the podium.

In the Year 9 competition, we had two teams who also did well.

Team 1 - Victoria deCostobadie, Claudia Hundleby, Tessa Sitjes and Ruby Young

Team 2 - Jessica Geng, Emily Harris, Phoebe Spear and Hannah Wylie.

Our Year 10 teams comprised of Team 1: Katy Buttle, Tess Roberts, Olivia Timbs and Tehya Laws, and Team 2: Mia Cleugh, Sienna Wu, Bella Spear and Dian Hermi. Both teams represented the school well and scored a very respectable 50 points, which was an exceptional result considering the tough competition.

Alongside the team's event, there was also a projects competition, where students could enter their work into a variety of categories, all linked to the overall theme of “Maths across Cultures”.

Millie Edwards and Charlotte Brown (Year 7) were awarded a Highly Commended for their board game designed to teach players about a range of maths topics. Charlotte Brown was also awarded a Highly Commended for her written work on why the Leaning Tower of Pisa stays upright! Madison Ashworth won a Highly Commended Award for her scale model of the Earth, with comparisons of populations across continents.

Millie Edwards was awarded an Excellence for her very impressive scale model of the London Eye, made out of a bike wheel, hula hoops, toothpicks and plastic cups!

A fantastic effort from all of our Cantamath students! Thanks also to all the staff involved in teaching and coaching: Miss Lloyd, Mrs Strang, Ms Pierson and Ms Sharman.
