SMC —

SMC was well represented at both a provincial and national level in lots of different sports over the holiday break - congratulations to everyone involved and please take note of key sports dates for 2019.

Cycling
Jenna Borthwick was placed  11th in the Girls U16 grade at the National Road Race held at Loburn and 10th in the points race.
Hannah Bartram was 11th in the U20 points race. Jenna also competed in the South Island School Track Champs in Invercargill last week. She won all four events in the U16 girls category including a scratch race, a tempo race, a keirin and a points race to take the over all title and gold medal.

Gymnastics
Renee Martin attended the NZ Gymnastics Champs in Tauranga during the holidays, competing in trampolining in the 15-16 year’s age group. Renee came away with a gold medal in the synchro alongside her partner and silver in the individual trampoline routines from 19 competitors.

Hockey
Seven of our 2nd XI girls won another gold medal this season at their respective U15 tournament in the holidays. Issy Story, Emelia Surridge and Chelsea Parrett played in the Canterbury U15A team beating Auckland in the final, winning 1-0. Issy was named MVP at the tournament.

Abby Mason, Niamh McKenzie, Piper Smith and Alice Ritchie played in the Canterbury U15B team beating Wanganui 2-0 in the final. Niamh was the Overall Top Goal Scorer at the tournament.

Chloe McNeill, Ally Booth and Sorell Shand were members of the Canterbury Primary B team who won the McGrath Trophy tournament. They were unbeaten throughout the week and didn't concede a goal the whole time.

Netball
A big congratulations to Eniselina Pale who was awarded the MVP trophy at the Christchurch Netball Centre Awards dinner this week. Lina was the overall Most Valuable Player from Premier 1, Premier 2, Senior 1 and Senior 2 grades throughout the season.

Touch
Canterbury representative teams have been selected. Congratulations to:

Volleyball
Over the holidays Loveday Mossman-Catchpole, Mia Thomson and Mia Fanselow from the SMC Senior A team played in the NZ Senior Women Club competition up in Auckland. They were part of the Christchurch Pioneer Team that finished second in Division 2. This is a great accomplishment as this is an adult competition and the best players around NZ compete in this. SMC Old Girl Kayla Placid was also part of that team, and Old Girl Anna Harrison (nee Scarlett) returned to the court after retiring from netball, playing for North Harbour.

Huge congratulations to Mia Thomson who was named in the Super 7 for this division as Best Libero and Mia Fanselow who was named Best Middle Blocker. A wonderful achievement.

Water Polo
At National tournaments during the holidays our SMC girls competed in Canterbury teams. A huge effort with many girls playing in both the U16 and U18 tournaments.
Canterbury U18 placed seventh - Annabel Norris, Ella Frazer, Hannah Price, Josie Persico, Tayla Marshall, Violette Perry
Canterbury U16 placed sixth - Ella Frazer, Emma McClure, Georgia Reed, Josie Persico, Tayla Marshall, Violette Perry

Athletics
Violette Perry has been selected into the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Athletics team to attend the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships in Cairns from 7-9 December.

Sport Exchanges
In week one of the holidays we were fortunate to host two visiting schools. On Tuesday 25 September we hosted Santiago College from Chile. Santiago tour New Zealand every two years and we enjoyed some close match ups in Hockey and Volleyball.

St Mary’s from Perth are also a school that visit regularly and this year we had Basketball, Hockey and Netball teams enjoying some competitive games.

This is a great opportunity for our girls to experience different styles of play and to share experiences with these girls who are attending similar schools albeit in different countries.
