SMC —

A huge welcome to SMC Sport for 2019. We look forward to seeing all our returning students alongside the many new girls who start with us this week. Term One is very busy with Swimming and Athletic Sports alongside our summer sporting competitions and tournaments. As always please keep us informed of any results or exciting news, accompanied with a photo if possible. Details of summer and winter trials are attached to this report.

Some results from the holiday period include:

Equestrian – Millie Harris won Champion rider in the 15-17 year age group at the New Zealand horse council show which has qualified her to ride for New Zealand in Sydney in March at the Grand Nationals.
Also busy over the holiday period Sophie Geddes picking up 3 Grand Prix pony wins which included the South Island Pony Grand Prix title. Sophie and ‘Benrose Silver Shadow’ won at two separate events in Ashburton and Sophie guided ‘Te Ngaio Ragamuffin’ to the South Island title in Waimate.

Futsal – Emily Lambie has been on the Gold Coast playing in an International Futsal tournament. Well done to Emily and her team for their 7th placing overall in the 16th grade.

Softball - Trinity Mackley-Flutey has been in the Canterbury U15 Softball team again this season and in January competed at the National tournament in Palmerston North. A fantastic result with Canterbury winning the NZ U15 title and earning the right to travel in Indonesia in July to play in the Little League tournament. Trinity gained selection in the tournament team and has just been named in the NZ Developing Sox U15 girls squad for 2019. The final team will be named at the conclusion of a camp in Christchurch in April.

Rowing - On the 17th of January, the St Margaret’s rowing squad traveled down to Twizel to compete at Canterbury Club Champs followed by a 4-day training camp. The weather was a challenging factor, only getting one complete day of racing. SMC qualified for 25 A finals and 4 B finals but unfortunately did not get to compete as the wind caused all racing on Sunday to be abandoned. This did not stop the squad from training off the water, with challenging hill sprints and ergs, but also balancing it out with fun team building activities. Although frustrating conditions all the girls found the camp beneficial and we are excited to see how the rest of the season goes. (Caroline Wells, Rowing Co-Captain)
