Centre For Innovation News

SMC —

T3A (technology for the third age) is a course offered to our community at the Centre For Innovation to help older people gain skills and confidence using todays technology.

And what a term it has been! It began full of trepidation, worry and fears - of not being good enough, failing to keep up and by being faced by these new high tech devices.

To help the group gain confidence and relax,  the tutors set a comfortable, supportive atmosphere and proceeded gradually at the group’s own pace

The course covered areas such as the keyboard and key functions, using the camera - focusing, selfies, viewing and editing photos. Using email to send photos and save photos received, web browsing, apps and downloading an e-book to read. Accessing newspapers and online resources available through the Christchurch City Library. Radio and music apps - free and paid and the iTunes Store and purchasing music.

The relaxed environment welcomed questions, encouraged problem solving,  promoted self-belief and frustrations were aired openly.

Technology can be daunting for those who feel they have been left behind, as an example, part of the way into the course one of the tutors received an email from a member of the group sadly stating “it was all too much for her, that she was too old for all this new technology”. After much deliberation, the tutor replied “ I do not accept your resignation and please give it another try”. Happily the member came back, bravely she shared her dilemma with the rest of the group and it became a turning point for her and others.

Here’s some feedback from the participants –
